Newsweek takes a look at a new study on how certain personality traits can sabotage close personal relationships:

"Your boyfriend’s cell phone starts ringing and the name of his ex flashes on the screen. As he heads to the other room to take the call, do you get angry, deciding that your boyfriend is fanning old flames? Or hardly blink, assuming that the call indicates that he ends relationships without burning bridges? Do you hold a grudge for the next few days or move on?

Your attitude toward situations like these—whether you tend to get jealous or stay cool—largely determines how you make decisions in a romantic context and how well you’re able to bond with a partner, according to a study published recently in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin."

New Schizophrenia Drug Shows Promise in Trials

In a clinical trial of about 200 patients, an experimental drug from Eli Lilly reduced schizophrenia symptoms without the serious side effects of current treatments, according to a paper published yesterday in the journal Nature.

The drug must still be evaluated on many more patients to test for the possibility of side effects that have not yet emerged, and it is at least three to four years from completing regulatory review.

...In the clinical trial whose results were reported yesterday, LY2140023 had none of those side effects and appeared to work about as well as Zyprexa at reducing symptoms.

'Real Age' suggests people take Folic Acid to keep their hearing in tip top shape.

"How Much Do You Need?

Fortunately, many products in the U.S. are fortified with folic acid, from breads to cereals to pasta, so you probably get at least a few hundred micrograms from your diet. But it's likely you'll need a supplement to reach the RealAge Optimum dose of 700 micrograms per day. Just be sure to stay below 1,000 micrograms per day, especially if you're over 65; as you get older, folic acid could mask a vitamin B12 deficiency."

Here's an interesting article from Newsweek - 'Can A High Fat Diet Beat Cancer':

"The theory is simple: if most aggressive cancers rely on the fermentation of sugar for growing and dividing, then take away the sugar and they should stop spreading. Meanwhile, normal body and brain cells should be able to handle the sugar starvation; they can switch to generating energy from fatty molecules called ketone bodies — the body's main source of energy on a fat-rich diet — an ability that some or most fast growing and invasive cancers seem to lack."

New Cancer treatment effective in providing lifetime immunity to cancer in mice could be treating humans in 2 years with simple blood product transfusion

From the Telegraph, cancer sufferers could be cured with injections of immune cells from other people within two years. Dr Zheng Cui, of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, has shown in laboratory experiments that immune cells from some people can be almost 50 times more effective in fighting cancer than in others. The treatment is called "GIFT" (Granulocyte InFusion Therapy).

The Fight Aging blog indicates that Dr Cui's work is important, and an impressive technology demonstration, but still pre-trial and one of dozens of just as effective demonstrated means to kill cancer. I think that because this treatment is so simple and similar to other methods that the delay until it is shown to work and optimized and until it is used should be far shorter than some other methods. FDA approval of some drugs is as long as 17 years.

U.S. study finds potential new ways to fight aging - 'Fasting'

U.S. study finds potential new ways to fight aging An elderly man takes a stroll in a file photo. Researchers said on Thursday they had found more ways to activate the body's own anti-aging defenses -- perhaps with a pill that could fight multiple diseases at once. REUTERS/Kirsten Neumann/Files

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Researchers said on Thursday they had found more ways to activate the body's own anti-aging defenses -- perhaps with a pill that could fight multiple diseases at once.

Their study, published in the journal Cell, helps explain why animals fed very low-calorie diets live longer, but it also offers new ways to try to replicate the effects of these diets using a pill instead of hunger, the researchers said.

Superfast Laser Turns Virus Into Rubble

A physicist and his biologist son destroyed a common virus using a superfast pulsing laser, without harming healthy cells. The discovery could lead to new treatments for viruses like HIV that have no cure.

"We have demonstrated a technique of using a laser to excite vibrations on the shield of a virus and damage it, so that it's no longer functional," said Kong-Thon Tsen, a professor of physics at Arizona State University. "We're testing it on HIV and hepatitis right now."

Gene Tweak Makes for Mighty Mice: Runs For Hours; Lives Longer; More Sex; Eats Without Gaining Weight...

MIGHTY MOUSE!...

Scientists at Case Western Reserve University have genetically engineered mice that outrun, outlive, and out-eat ordinary mice while staying lean, light, and fertile well into old age.

Chalk it up to a change in a single gene.

That genetic tweak boosted levels of an enzyme called PEPCK-C in the mice's skeletal muscles, knocking mice's muscle metabolism into orbit.

"They are metabolically similar to Lance Armstrong biking up the Pyrenees," researcher Richard Hanson, PhD, says in a news release.

Drug Shows Promise of Reducing Heart Attacks, Report Says

ORLANDO, Nov. 4 — An experimental anti-clotting drug from Eli Lilly reduced heart attacks in patients with heart disease by 24 percent compared with Plavix, the current standard treatment, according to a report released today in The New England Journal of Medicine.

But the experimental treatment also increased the risk of severe bleeding compared with Plavix, and quadrupled the risk of fatal bleeding, though the risk was still relatively small.

New Study: Lose Your Virginity Earlier, Become Less Delinquent Teens Who Smoke Pot Become Athletes & Have Better Relationships

"the earlier you lose your virginity, the less likely you are to become a delinquent. Old finding: Kids who have early sex become delinquents. New findings: 1) When you eliminate genetic differences by comparing twins, those who have sex earlier don't become more delinquent. 2) Compared with fraternal twins, identical twins lose their virginity at relatively similar ages, which implies that the age at which you lose your virginity is genetically influenced. 3) In fact, "adolescents who had sex at younger ages were less likely to end up delinquent than those who lost their virginity later." Researchers' conclusions: 1) Early sex and delinquency share a genetic basis, probably in propensity to take risks. 2) For teens with risk-taking genes, "sexual relationships may offer an alternative to trouble." Old advice: Pet your dog, not your date. New advice: Pop a cherry, not a cap. Bonus report: Kids who smoke pot (but not cigarettes) are "significantly more likely to practice sports and they have a better relationship with their peers" than kids who smoke neither. (Related: the case for lowering the age of sexual consent."

Workout Music Can Improve Your Health

The New York Times says, "The playlist fixation has a scientific basis: Studies have shown that listening to music during exercise can improve results, both in terms of being a motivator (people exercise longer and more vigorously to music) and as a distraction from negatives like fatigue. But are certain songs more effective than others?"

Scientists discover way to reverse loss of memory

"Scientists performing experimental brain surgery on a man aged 50 have stumbled across a mechanism that could unlock how memory works," according to a report published in the UK independent today.

"The accidental breakthrough came during an experiment originally intended to suppress the obese man's appetite, using the increasingly successful technique of deep-brain stimulation. Electrodes were pushed into the man's brain and stimulated with an electric current. Instead of losing appetite, the patient instead had an intense experience of déjà vu. He recalled, in intricate detail, a scene from 30 years earlier. More tests showed his ability to learn was dramatically improved when the current was switched on and his brain stimulated.

Scientists are now applying the technique in the first trial of the treatment in patients with Alzheimer's disease."

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
