Authentic roots reggae can be extremely potent and profoundly moving, and being seriously dread is usually a given. I love it for all those qualities. But as with classical music (Mozart, Debussy), a lighter touch works too. A sense of fun is nothing to sneeze at, especially when combined with a high level of musical competence. That’s why I don’t sneeze at Noiseshaper.

Playful ideas, creative arrangements, appealing melodies, contrasting textures –Rough Out There takes them all and throws them into an inventive dub mix, where great vocals take on worthy lyrics and where supple rhythms rule. It’s true that Noiseshaper’s previous album, The Signal, was much the same, with musical hooks all over the place, but there are enough differences to make this one every bit as necessary and with the minor exception of one track, just as delightful.
