THE HANDY DANDY ANALOGX BITPUMP

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks for taking the time to test this beta version of AnalogX BitPump, a
lightweight, low-dependency, fast BitTorrent client for Windows. The beta
version is set to expire in a few months, but the release version should be
out long before than unless somethings really major comes up.
All of the core functionality of the program should be operational, including
all the settings from the config. It shouldn't have any problems downloading
Torrent files that any of the other clients can - so if you encounter any
problems, please contact me.
There shouldn't be anything major you can do to foul things up - in the config
you can always hit 'Reset' to bring it back to the install defaults if it's
acting crazy. In most cases all you'll probably ever be doing is clicking
on .torrent links inside your browser and downloading, and that's about it.
One note on the availability display; here's how to interpret what it is
showing. Since all torrent downloads are sliced up into pieces, each line
in the availability display translates to one (or more) piece of the file.
If the piece is red, that means that the particular piece is not currently
available from any of the peers you're connected to. Normally this is no
big deal, since you're constantly connecting to new peers, sooner or later
you should find someone who has it. The color yellow indicates that a
particular piece is only available from one source - if the Retrieval
method in the Peer config is set to scarcity, then it will try to get these
uncommon pieces first. Next it will show a shade of blue - dark blue
means there are less peers sharing a piece all the way to light blue which
means a piece is readily available. Finally, green indicates that you have
successfully downloaded and verified that particular piece of the file.
If you encounter any problems (ie; bugs), please do the following:
1. In the directory where BitPump is installed in, you'll find a file
called 'debug.log', this file contains debug information to help
me get a better idea of what was happening when the problem occurred.
This file gets overwritten every time BitPump runs, so make sure to
zip it up and send it to me before you run the program again.
2. If the problem was with a particular torrent file, include the torrent
(if possible) with the debug.log in the zip file.
3. Shoot me an email at:
[email protected]
***THIS EMAIL ADDRESS WILL ONLY BE VALID DURING TESTING***
and attach the zip file you just made. In the message, also give me
the details about what you expected to happen, what really happened,
and any other information that might be of use.
If you have any suggestions for improvements, shoot them to the same email
address listed above. Right now top of this list is UPNP support, the
new trackerless extension, and UDP support - so don't bother asking for those,
they're already on the top of the list :)
Also, please don't redistribute this anywhere (ie; post it on other sites, etc),
I'm trying to keep the beta as low key as possible, so if you have a friend
that's a super torrent user, by all means give him a copy, but just don't submit
it to snapfiles.com or anything like that! :) I would also like to thank
everyone at Steve Gibson's ThinkTank newsgroup that helped test and improve the
first version of the app - your suggestions and testing was invaluable!
Thanks again for checking out the program!
-Mark
Yeah, don't get too into it just yet.
In the next week or so, major improvements are due.
It's still very early BETAish. The author seems quite reserved about people using it.
At times, it almost seems like he didn't even wan't to publicly release it just yet.
Got a file downloading now. Thge d/l is kind of slow, but the u/l is going like a bat out of hell!!
That's not uncommon for BitTorrent.
Your download speed will increase.
I wan't to stress this to everyone:
Don't bother evaluating this program's worth yet. You're not seeing an even partially finished product here.
Also, don't bother evaluating BitTorrent performance based on the use of this client.
You'll end up misleading yourself.
This version has been updated, but as far as I can tell, the version number is still exactly the same (and buried in the debug.log file when the program is installed).
Also, be aware that BitPump takes over the Torrent file association without prompting or warning the user.
    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
      You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
      But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
