Judge wants jail time for two violent mothers

As a note, I know this judge, as I was before him for DWI. His ruling was that he felt that I was being railroaded, but if I ever came before him again on a similar charge he would through the book at me. PS, I made damm sure it never happened again, but I have followed his career, and he is tough but fair.

Story:

The crown prosecutor may have been persuaded that two mothers convicted of a violent assault should be given house arrest, partly so they can continue caring for their children, but not the judge.

Chief Justice Joe Kennedy had harsh words Monday for Laura Pernell, 36, and Dannica Grouse, 22. The two mothers pled guilty to charges stemming from the prolonged beating in 2002 of 51-year-old David Connors.

Calling it "barbaric" and "senseless," Kennedy outlined the attack during the hearing.

He said there were several vicious attacks on Connors, carried out by between six and 15 people, with the accused among the leaders.

It started at "pizza Corner" in the heart of downtown, when a glass of pop was hurled at Connors. He was then set upon and beaten with fists, feet, rocks and pieces of concret.

You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
