Chris Akin reviews Ozzys" Prince of Darkness "

Regardless of how old you are, you know the name Ozzy Osbourne. If you are a 20-something, it's probably knowing him as the old buffoon from THE OSBOURNES TV show. It's truly sad if that's what you know him for. If you are a 30- or 40- or 50- or even 60-something...well...your memory and impressions of Ozzy are quite different. You probably look at Ozzy as the single most influential voice in the history of heavy metal. While most performers would love to have virtually any 5 year run that Ozzy has had in his career, he's come forth with two different career paths that have shown him to be larger than life. Be it the decade of defining heavy metal with Black Sabbath, or becoming the king of metal once again with the incredible self-stylings of his solo career, it's hard to deny that Ozzy Osbourne has blazed a musical trail that is not likely to ever be matched.

PRINCE OF DARKNESS takes a look at the great solo work Ozzy has done, as well as revealing a new covers disc. For the most part, this release is all you would ever need. All the "hits" are here on the first two discs. All the great guitar players Ozzy has worked with are featured, and it's everything you would look for.

It's the 2nd half of this 4 CD set that is really hit or miss. There are some things here that are really cool. "Purple Haze", a cover that Ozzy provided for the Moscow Peace Festival soundtrack (I believe...I could be wrong there), is well worth having here. "Pictures Of Matchstick Man" with the help of Type O Negative is another cool collectible to be added in. However, the duet with Miss Piggy of The Muppet Show fame is unforgivable. Is there anyone at all clamoring for this cover of "Born To Be Wild"? And as unforgivable as that is, there's nothing more embarrassing in Ozzy's career than the hideous version of the Bee Gees "Stayin' Alive". What in the world was he thinking to do this in the first place? And even worse, what was Sharon thinking for including this song on this (or any) collection? As for the new collection of covers, they are OK, but nothing really stands out as great.

RATING - 6/10 - When it rocks, it really rocks. When it doesn't, it really doesn't. The 1st 2 CDs are cool. The back half I could have lived without. The strength of the first half outweighs the weakness of the 2nd half by a little, so a 6/10 is appropriate.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
