Sharon Van Etten Talks Heartbreak, Friendship, Touring on "Entrevista"

Sharon Van Etten gets personal in her new interview for Pitchfork.tv and Canal 180's "Entrevista" series, which features behind-the-scenes chats with artists ("Entrevista" means "interview" in Portuguese). Watch the episode below.

In this episode, Van Etten speaks out on the palliative effects of the creative process, and how she uses songwriting to heal and reflect. "People always ask me, 'why do you only write about heartbreak?'," Van Etten says. "I think I only write when I’m broken, so that’s just what happens. It makes me feel better, but having some distance helps."

She also tells stories on how current and past friendships have shaped her art, from the polaroid cover of her recent album Are We There (a photograph of Van Etten's longtime friend, who's since moved away) to Sean Durkin's music video for "Your Love Is Killing Me" (which came about after she met the director through a mutual friend).
