Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks Share "Catchy (Was Contagious)" Short Film

Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks—the band featuring Animal Collective's Avey Tare, ex-Dirty Projectors member Angel Deradoorian, and ex-Ponytail drummer Jeremy Hyman—have shared a nine-minute short film for their Enter the Slasher House track "Catchy (Was Contagious)". Shot in black-and-white and directed by Abigail Portner, centers around a young boy who wanders about a deserted city before running into some unsavory characters. A harrowing chase ensues. Watch below.

Here's a statement about the video from the director:

I wanted to make a video that referenced old horror movies from the 1950s Universal horror era. I am obsessed with movies like The Third Man, Truffaut’s 400 Blows and Ingmar Bergman’s films. I wanted it to have the style of classic old LA so we used the LA river and the neighborhoods surrounding it as locations. The movie Them from the 1940s was shot on the LA river and I wanted it to have that feel also. Parts of Grease and Chinatown were filmed there too. The videos I make for Animal Collective and my own personal style is pretty specific so it was great to work with Giovanni [Ribisi, director of photography] because I feel like he just got it. We were on the same page thematically, reference-wise and with regards to the style of filming and our goal - to create something that has a classic, pretty 1950’s feel to it but the undertone is still very dark.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
