Azealia Banks Parts Ways with Universal, Would Love to Join Interpol

Azealia Banks has announced her split with  Universal, the label which she signed to in 2012 following the success of her breakthrough hit "212". The rapper's departure follows several years of complications associated with her long-delayed debut Broke With Expensive Taste, which had a frustrated Banks begging to be dropped from her label earlier this year.

Banks excitedly announced the split through a series of tweets comparing herself to Miss Celie, a character from The Color Purple:

For Banks, the parting of ways also represents a second chance to be the "cool indie chick" she dreamt of becoming at age 14. She can do whatever she wants now, so hey, why not ask fellow New Yorkers Interpol (whose new LP, El Pintor, drops later this year) if they need recruits?

But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
