ALBUM REVIEW - What's Wrong With This Picture?

10/22/2003

By Ken Micallef

If you only read smug publications like Blender you might believe that Van Morrison is a "grumpy grampy" bitter about his place in the music world, just another old fart knocking on heaven's door. Morrison's pioneering '60s and '70s R&B was storming the charts before the Strokes were potty trained, and the grand old man of British soul has recorded more classic albums (Tupelo Honey, St. Dominic's Preview, Astral Weeks) than Jack White has tepid blues covers. Morrison's jazzy spirituals are cut through by his internal battles and iconoclast vision, a vision that has become more grizzled as the years have rolled by. Yep, he's been around, but his music continues to inspire with a rare authenticity and soulfulness. What's Wrong With This Picture?won't satisfy those more charmed by style than soul, but the album's late night torch tributes, jump jive burners and big band wailers are the sound of a soul singer aging but still spitting vinegar. Referring to Sartre and Camus, Nietzsche and Hess, Morrison sings of living under duress and dealing with loneliness. These songs cover the perils of fortune and fame, as well as the simple joys of singing the blues and swinging (and scatting) in 3/4 time. Morrison may be old and gray, but his loins (and his songs) still have some spark left.

I've had this album for two or three weeks and I've played it probably a dozen times........it's stone cold great. Van Morrison can polish up old songs as well as anybody living, and he has such a love for many different genres that there's a wealth of untapped gems still in him. If he never wrote another song, he'd still make great albums.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
