  2. Luther Vandross Luther Vandross (RCA) After five Grammy awards and multi-Platinum selling albums, the pressure's on for Luther Vandross to pull another smash hit out of the bag with his latest offering, simply titled Luther Vandross. Luther's career has spanned three decades. He made his first breakthrough with "Everybody Rejoice (A Brand New Day)", which he wrote for the hit Broadway musical 'The Wiz' which was later remade for the big screen with an all star cast which included Michael Jackson and Diana Ross. He has had several successful collaborations over the years with the likes of Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson, just to a name a few. Mr Vandross is also a renowned producer, songwriter and arranger and has penned soul classics such as "Power of Love/Love Power" and "Secret Love". Luther Vandross, his 15th solo album, doesn't disappoint. The opening track "Take You Out" (already a big hit in the clubs), sets the mood as Luther takes you through a journey of love, sorrow and life. "Bring your heart to time" is the stand out ballad of the album, closely followed by the haunting "Heaven can wait". However don't be fooled into thinking that this is just another album of romantic love songs; Luther forges his way into the new millennium with the upbeat, no messing r & b track "How do I tell her". He doesn't forget his roots either; we are taken on a trip down memory lane with "Let's make tonight the night", a track reminiscent of the funky soul of the 80's, the music that really brought him to our attention. With this album Luther has stepped into the 21st century with style. He's combined his classic soul sound with the new digitised r & b beat, therefore cleverly pleasing his die-hard fans and also paving the way for a new generation of followers. Luther is undisputedly still the king of soul ballads but he is also recognised as a force to be reckoned with on the new r & b scene. He was recently awarded the Music Of Black Origin (MOBO) Lifetime Achievement Award. I think we can safely say that Luther's lifetime achievements are far from over. BBC.com

  6. By TED BRIDIS, AP Technology Writer WASHINGTON - The recording industry has filed 41 more lawsuits against computer users in at least 11 states it said were caught illegally distributing songs over the Internet, continuing its aggressive campaign against online music piracy. The latest copyright suits this week bring to 382 filed since the Washington-based Recording Industry Association of America (news - web sites) announced its legal campaign nearly six months ago. The group's president, Cary Sherman, said the group has no plans to cut back, even as media coverage over the continuing lawsuits wanes. "People who engage in illegal file-sharing should be aware, whether or not they hear about it this month, that doesn't mean the enforcement program has been reduced in any way," Sherman said. "If anything it will be increased." The recording industry is monitoring popular Internet services where computer users can download song files, searching for people illegally distributing the largest music collections. Court-issued subpoenas compel Internet providers to identify their customers linked to the online accounts used to download songs. Among the RIAA's recent targets is retiree Ernest Brenot, 79, of Ridgefield, Wash., who wrote in a handwritten note to a federal judge that he does not own a computer nor can he operate one. Brenot was accused of illegally offering for download 774 songs by artists including Vanilla Ice, U2, Creed, Linkin Park and Guns N' Roses. Brenot's wife, Dorothy, said she and her husband were stunned by the claims, offended at the suggestion they listened to such music. Brenot was targeted in the previous round of 80 suits the recording organization filed late in October. Brenot and her husband said their son-in-law briefly added Internet service to their own cable television account while living with the couple because Comcast Cable Communications Inc. said it would add a surcharge to send separate bills to the same mailing address. "There's a mistake in this case," Dorothy Brenot said. "We're innocent in all of this, but I don't know how we're going to prove it." The 41 most recent suits were filed against Internet users in Massachusetts, Colorado, Arizona, Connecticut, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, Illinois and Washington. The recording industry also said Wednesday that it has reached financial settlements against at least 220 computer users. Defense lawyers familiar with some of the cases have said penalties ranged from $2,500 to $7,500 each. Yahoo.com

  18. Released: 27th February 2003 Whither Ryland Cooder? The world's foremost slide guitarist, über-sessioneer and general guardian of music with authenticity has, for the last few years, subsumed his profile under projects that threw the spotlight onto musicians that the Western world had yet to 'discover'. The Buena Vista Social Club and Ali Farka Touré etc. all benefited from from Ry's commitment to educating, enlightening and entertaining. But where's the man that made Into The Purple Valley, Chicken Skin Music or Paris, Texas? Well, Mambo Sinuendo doesn't exactly redress the balance, but he's back in full electric form, and world music this ain't. Cooder's not the first to attempt to conjure up his childhood years in the form of musical nostalgia. Many artists from Billy Joel to Neil Young have recalled their post-war years, emerging at the cusp of jazz's transformation into rock 'n' roll. Donald Fagen's Nightfly erred on the side of smooth sophistication with its evocation of 50s optimism, but Mambo Sinuendo remains closer to Tom Verlaine's underrated Warm And Cool, with retro-reverbed guitars and whammy bar whooziness. Joining forces with Manuel Galban, former member of Cuba's premier vocal group of the 50s and 60s, Los Zafiros, Mambo... plays homage to the Perez Prado school of cha-cha rock 'n' roll (there's a delightfully cheesy version of Prado's ''Patricia'' here). Sinuous rhythms courtesy of old pal Jim Keltner, collide with girly choruses - all Duane Eddy holidaying in Havana. Remember the seedy Cuban club Fredo took Michael to in The Godfather Part 2? This is the soundtrack. Galban's grit and twang (one track is even called ''Los Twangueros'' A result of Ry's inability to find a suitably descriptive term in Spanish!) is more than matched by Cooder's trademark growl, especially on "Monte A Dentro". It's a welcome return to a sound unheard since Get Rhythm and perfectly showcased in such a warm and humorously danceable setting. However it's the penultimate track, a slow extemporised version of the jazz standard ''Secret Love'' that really stands out here. Cooder's twitches, flourishes and tentative pickings all put one in mind of the only other man to approach the guitar with such a breadth of vision - Marc Ribot. So he's still in love with Castro's Caribbean hideaway and this is an exquisite tropical jewel of an album. In these uncertain times he's a lucky man to have been granted a special dispensation (courtesy of Bill Clinton) to visit Cuba at all. But maybe the signs are here that he's turning his eyes homeward at last. Not before time... Reviewer: Chris Jones The BBC
  19. End of Violence Score from the Motion Picture Soundtrack Ry who? Unless you're deeply into the slide-guitar scene, you've probably just heard the name and know nothing of the man. But you'll recognize his sound from work he's done with everyone from the Rolling Stones to Captain Beefheart and Randy Newman. In 1984, Wim Wenders contacted Cooder about creating the incredible soundtrack for his acclaimed film Paris, Texas. Now, 13 years later, he was called to the scene and produced a brand new, etherial score for Wim's new film, The End of Violence. Of course, things are different now, and the score for The End of Violence contains less twang and more technology. The group of fourteen session musicians (among them Howie B. and Joachim, Cooder's son) invented a new kind of laid-back, other-worldly ambience never before heard by human ears. The demented, stomach-turning spell of "You Shoot Him!" and the reverberating, sickening spin of "Kinko's" are creepily magnetic, drawing you into that back alley where the homeless things are. The brass-fronted "Vamos Empezar" sounds like a busy L.A. street on a rainy night and the film's end title theme is a distant acoustic after the downpour. The End of Violence is not just the score to an art film. It's a landmark electronic/twang fusion destined to go down in history as one of those albums you'll not only enjoy owning, but will also amplify your musical wisdom as your friends browse your CD collection.
