  2. NPR and the World Cafe interviews George Martin and his son, with samples from the new cd Love, created for the Circe de Solei: Thanks to his production work on almost every Beatles album released in the '60s -- up through Abbey Road -- Sir George Martin is often regarded as "The Fifth Beatle." As a producer and composer, Martin has assembled a body of work that spans more than half of a century and is as varied as it is legendary. He also sent out a few other holiday jams and well-wishes to those spending Christmas "onboard US Navy and United Fruit Company ships equipped with Fessenden's wireless receivers." 4. I saw the latest Rocky last night. The prologue is too long--the ending doesn't work for me--but the film was still enjoyable, and in particular, the small human dramas inbetween.
  5. I found this clever animated video today at Antville.org which mixes classical music and electronica. Watch It Here in streaming or download the highgrade video. It seems appropriate for the holidays so I am posting it here - Merry Xmas to everyone from Beatking.
  6. MONTANA CITY — Angels descended on Ken and Jodi Gardner’s piece of paradise last weekend, clad in Carhartt coveralls and tool belts. They came to build not just a house but a home, to replace what the Gardner family lost three weeks ago in a fire. The old-fashioned house-raising began at 7:30 a.m. last Friday. By noon, around 50 people were cutting lumber, setting beams and standing interior walls. Read More
  7. An Updated 'Messiah' from Marin Alsop Weekend Edition Saturday, December 23, 2006 · Handel's Messiah was a part of the holiday season long before Kris Kringle. The oratorio uses Biblical passages to tell the story of Christ's birth, death and resurrection. Conductor Marin Alsop thought the imposing composition could withstand some modern experimentation. 11. Blogger The Passion of Weiss reviews Justin's most recent show in all it's GLORY This is another must read - here is an excerpt: ..."Timberlake, backed by a group of talented session musicians, had broken into a tepid and nausea-inducing version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit. " The entire time he spent mangling one of my favorite childhood songs, I had considered Kurt Cobain and his shotgun. And how with three precision-placed bullets, anyone could play their own version of Dick Cheney goes hunting. Except rather than take out some lame-duck Texas lawyer, the assassin in question, could carefully snipe Timberlake, Levine and Hilton, thereby eliminating three of the power players in the scab-infested world of pop culture in 2006. It was a question almost akin to being in Berlin, Germany in a beer hall in the late 20's. Some jackass with a Junior varsity mustache is approaching you, telling you his name's Adolph and that he hates the Jews and those filthy gypsies. We all know that murder is wrong but still.... Now I'm not advocating the murder of innocent-in-name only pop stars, nor am I really comparing cultural holocaust to a real one. Those are wild accusations to make, even for me. Though watching this sham show, that old refrain from Bob Dylan popped into my head: "if my thought dreams could be seen, they'd probably put my head in a guillotine." I think we actually have a guillotine around here somewhere...who wants to do the honors? :)

  16. I met him once early in his career. This was right after Platoon. We talked for about an hour. He wanted to be in a military film set in the Middle East as part of an ensemble, which I was interested in. I suggested that he go against the grain - and suggested a number of Bohemian novels (On the Road, etc). If you look at his early career, he did commercial stuff - it wasnt until Edward Scissorhands that he started to take on another route to distinguish himself

  19. NEW YORK - Macy's has pulled from its shelves and its Web site two styles of Sean John hooded jackets, originally advertised as featuring faux fur, after an investigation by the nation's largest animal protection organization concluded that the garments were actually made from a certain species of dog called "raccoon dog." "First these jackets were falsely advertised as faux fur, and then it turned out that the fur came from a type of dog," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States.
