  8. M83 plans to tone things down on their next release, "Saturdays = Youth", which is due out from Mute in April. Pitchfork interviews M83s frontman Anthony Gonzales about the change in direction: "I think repetition is death. So the new record [has] a different path and a different focus." Yet, as he's quick to add, "It's different but it's from the same mold. "I don't think this record is a betrayal for M83 fans. I just wanted to make something different and I hope they will like this new departure, because I think the fans were waiting for something else too." Read More M83 - In Church (unofficial video)
  9. "The Grammy Awards will be in full voice next month, with the striking writers guild agreeing Monday to allow its members to work on the show," according to a report published in today's Los Angeles Examiner. God knows they could use some good writing on that show... Come to think of it, they could use some decent music, too. PS I may have spoken too soon. Neil Portnow, president of the Recording Academy is promising a 50th anniversary show ''with an amazing lineup of artists and performances.'' Perhaps we have something to look forward to after all...
  10. This is an interesting. Expect a lot of copycat moves by other social communities: "Facebook announced Friday a new JavaScript client library that will allow Facebook apps to be displayed on any website," according to TechCruch. "The client library allows users to make Facebook API calls from any web site and create Ajax Facebook applications on that website." Read More

  13. Scientists discover way to reverse loss of memory "Scientists performing experimental brain surgery on a man aged 50 have stumbled across a mechanism that could unlock how memory works," according to a report published in the UK independent today. "The accidental breakthrough came during an experiment originally intended to suppress the obese man's appetite, using the increasingly successful technique of deep-brain stimulation. Electrodes were pushed into the man's brain and stimulated with an electric current. Instead of losing appetite, the patient instead had an intense experience of déjà vu. He recalled, in intricate detail, a scene from 30 years earlier. More tests showed his ability to learn was dramatically improved when the current was switched on and his brain stimulated. Scientists are now applying the technique in the first trial of the treatment in patients with Alzheimer's disease." Read More
  14. Andy Young at Harp Magazine interviews the Baltimore's experimental music duo, Beach House, which consists of Alex Scally on guitar and keyboards, and Victoria Legrand on vocals and organ. Dan Sully's music video for their song, 'Master of None', follows. HARP: People try hard to label you, but often miss. Victoria: I don’t really feel we’re that folksy. I’m not feeling the folk vibe, but I’m also not feeling the squareness of electronic music. We’re not making the beats on a computer. They come from organs or real drums. The only time we use a computer is live, as a way to play the beats from the original tapes on stage. Because of the sedate nature of the vocals, I think we were put into shoegaze category when we really weren’t that at all. Then came the folktronica label, which we did not feel akin to either. I don’t really mind the comparisons, because for the most part we were just having fun with taking bits and pieces of this and that. Read More
  15. The Who perform songs from "Live at Leeds", "Who's Next", "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia", when they were at the top of their game, live in Philadelphia, circa 1973. I saw them at the same venue with The James Gang, a year or so before, and they were unbelievable. You can listen to the full concert over at Wolfgang's Vault. The track list is spelled out below - enjoy.

  20. New York Magazine takes a look at the city's new experimental movement in classical music: "Today’s young composers and freelance musicians have become entrepreneurial multitaskers. They organize concerts and master electric versions of their instruments. They double as mandolin players, countertenors, sound engineers, and publicists. They play each other’s music, attend each other’s concerts, and ladle each other’s successful ideas liberally into their own compositions. To pick one example among many, the Juilliard-trained violist Lev Zhurbin, also known as “Ljova,” has played with Yo-Yo Ma and appeared at Zankel Hall, and it was he who arranged Kalhor’s Silent City for string quartet. But he’s probably most at home with his band the Vjola Contraband, which I also heard at Joe’s Pub, performing what might be described as Eastern European avant-folk." Read More
  21. "Paul McGuinness, longtime manager of rock band U2, has called on Internet service providers to immediately introduce disconnection policies to end illegal music downloads and urged governments to make sure they do," according to Yahoo News. "In a passionate keynote speech delivered Monday during the International Managers Summit at the MIDEM music conference, McGuinness said it was time for artists to stand up against what he called the "shoddy, careless and downright dishonest way they have been treated in the digital age."
