8. By William E. Ketchum III It’s been years since Ashanti was at the forefront of the R&B world alongside her Murder Inc. family Ja Rule and Lloyd, but the accomplished singer/songwriter isn’t done quite yet. The Grammy winner has founded her own label, Written Entertainment, and is teaming with eOne Music to release a new studio album. Most importantly to fans, there’s new music: today she released “The Woman You Love,” featuring new Cash Money signee Busta Rhymes. The song features a pulsating backdrop, and Ashanti singing about a love interest who wasted her time, despite her trying her best to make him happy. Bus-a-Bus caps off the song by admitting the man’s guilt and asking for her back, before insisting that he’s gone for good if he leaves. “I’m so excited to have my own record label, Written Entertainment. With eOne as my distributor, I feel that their innovative and ambitious approach to the music industry, really gives my label a worldwide presence,” Ashanti said in a statement. “They have the top radio people in the business and are hungry to win! The more I learned the business the more I knew this is what I wanted. Ownership is so important. As a business woman this was a great move for me!” In previous years, Ashanti earned accolades in records, awards and radio spins. Her self-titled debut album set a Soundscan record as the biggest opening week sales for a new female artist, she was the first female performer to simultaneously hold the top two places on Billboard Hot 100 with “Foolish” and “What’s Luv.” The same album earned her a Grammy for Best Contemporary R&B Album. 11. For every list of movie award nominations, there will probably be an almost equally long list of snubs. Unsurprisingly, this year's Golden Globe nominations missed some of the year's best work, but some of the snubs were just too big to ignore. To right some of the wrongs, we picked our five most unforgivable oversights from the Golden Globe nominations. No Original Song Nominations for 'The Muppets' You'd be hard-pressed to find someone who didn't walk out of "The Muppets" belting out "Man or Muppet" or whistling "Life's A Happy Song." In a fair and just world, Bret McKenzie's work on the film would have taken up three of the five slots, because aside from being catchy as hell, the songs made the film work as well as it did. No Actor Nomination for Gary Oldman in 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' Gary Oldman has always been one of film's most animated actors, so when he turned in as quiet and controlled of a performance as he did with "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy," people took notice. Sadly, the HFPA were not among them. Oldman has never been nominated for either a Golden Globe or an Oscars. Who do I blame? EEVVVERRYYOONNEE! No Director Nomination for Terrence Malick for 'Tree of Life' Regardless of where you stand on the cosmic elements of the "Tree of Life," director Terrence Malick deserves recognition for the scope, scale and vision of his epic. He captured some of the year's best performances and made a film unlike anything we've ever seen before. Comparatively, many of the other director nominations seem safe. No Lead Actor Nomination for Michael Shannon in 'Take Shelter' As a man struggling with the end of the world and/or the loss of his sanity, Michael Shannon commanded the screen in "Take Shelter" and proved he's one of the most interesting actors working today. The scene at the community center alone was worthy of a nomination, but thankfully, Shannon is the type of actor that will show up on shortlists for years to come. No Best Motion Picture Nomination for 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2' It was always a long shot, but if you compare this movie to every other this year in terms of emotional payoff, it clearly deserved a Best Motion Picture nomination. Ten years in the making, "Deathly Hallows - Part 2" had the tallest order of any movie in 2011: deliver a satisfying conclusion and work as a stand alone movie. Not only did it fulfill its promises, it surpassed expectations. Honorable Mention: Almost Every Television Category The HFPA always favors newer shows, but they took it too far this year. By nominating seven new series for the ten Best Series slots, they managed to snub "Parks and Recreation," "Breaking Bad," and "Friday Night Lights." With the latter two, the HFPA also missed obvious actor nominations for Aaron Paul, Giancarlo Esposito and Kyle Chandler. Don't even make me mention that they ignored Steve Carrell's last episodes on "The Office." What were your biggest snubs? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter! View the full article

 13. By Rob Markman Jay-Z has overseen the careers of quite a few artists. From Memphis Bleek and Beanie Sigel to Rihanna and Kanye West, Hov has helped turn budding talent into musical stars. Still, let Jay-Z tell it and handling individual artists requires a special touch. Jigga actually compares his position as a label CEO to being a dad. "I think running a label is a bit like having kids," Hov told MTV News while in New York to promote two charitable Carnegie Hall concerts in February. The Roc Nation CEO's answer came in response to criticism that he could have done more to endorse J. Cole, who dropped his debut, Cole Word: The Sideline Story, in September. "When you know someone needs more help, you help them," Jigga said. "When you see that someone can make it on their own ... you see Kanye or J. Cole, you see that sort of talent — you let that talent be. You let that talent find its way." It's no secret that a co-sign from the God MC can help anyone's career, but in the case of J. Cole, Hov didn't believe his Roc Nation signee needed any more than what he was given. And apparently, Jay was right. With Sideline Story, Cole debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart, selling more than 217,000 copies in its first week of release. To Hova's credit, he did appear on "Mr. Nice Watch," a braggadocios album cut off of Cole's debut, but the guest appearance came in the ninth inning. By August, Jay had not yet contributed to the album. During a press listening session that month it was clear that Cole was not expecting the feature. "Nobody owes me anything," he said. "Jay-Z doesn't owe me a verse because I signed to him." Still, Jay was watching his protégé from afar, careful not to interfere with Cole's creative process. "Of course, you're not gonna let any harm befall it," Hov said of his approach to cultivating talent. "You pretty much let people find their way." As Roc Nation enters 2012 with a roster that includes Willow Smith, Jay Electronica and vocalist Bridget Kelly, Hov has set a standard on how he intends to run his company. "I'm just really here to provide opportunity. I'm not here to do anything else," he said. "I provide the opportunity, you figure out what you want to say to the world and how you gonna do it. "It's much more than just a [16-bar verse] and an endorsement deal; it's an opportunity to let your voice be heard. It's really about you, it's not about me." What do you think Jay's approach to running Roc Nation? Sound off in the comments below! 16. By Henna Kathiya Mary J. Blige already has more Grammy trophies than she can count, but soon she might be able to add a Golden Globe to her collection. The nine-time Grammy award winning singer received a nomination for Best Original Song for "The Living Proof," which appears in "The Help." MJB is up against fellow diva Madonna who was also nominated in the same category for her song ‘Masterpiece’ in the film "W.E." This may not be the only Golden Globe nomination in MJB’s future. She’s starring in the upcoming film adaptation of the Broadway Musical "Rock of Ages" as Justice Charlier, the owner of a gentlemen’s club that’s in jeopardy of going out of business due to local protest. Even while brushing up on her acting chops she managed to put out her 10th album, em>My Life II…The Journey Continues, which debuted November 21st and charted at number five on the Billboard Top 200 in its first week. 20. By Rob Markman Wiz Khalifa is the king of cool. The head of the Taylor Gang, with all of his tattoos, weed anthems and energetic stage show seems to have emerged as the leader of a new generation of party animals. But rather than play that same character in his first acting gig, Khalifa switched it up for his and Snoop Dogg’s upcoming film “Mac & Devin Go to High School.” "I'm super square in the movie," Wiz told MTV News, laughing backstage at his and Snoop's New York concert last week. "I'm a square in the movie, and I pretty much maintain that squareness. I mean, I walk on the wild side, I do some cool things, but I tapped into my nerdy side." Though the "Mac & Devin" soundtrack hit stores Tuesday, the stoner comedy won't be out until February. According to Wiz, it wasn't as difficult for him to turn down his cool for the camera. "That's kind of who I am as a real person too; I was really reserved," Khalifa said about his high school days at Taylor Allderdice High in Pittsburgh. "I was really fall-backish, so I can totally connect with my character Devin in the movie. It was real easy." Fans got their first real glimpse of Wiz as Devin in the duo's "Young, Wild & Free" video. In the clip which mixes movie scenes with performance footage, Wiz's character is seen wandering through the school halls looking extremely studious with his shirt buttoned all the way to the top. It was quite the transformation. "I had to do makeup every day to cover my tattoos. I had to spray my hair to get the blond out, but it was cool. It was an experience, and it was really, really fun to be a novice at acting, be brand-new and then have to learn," Khalifa said. "I watched the movie, and I can actually see myself getting better in the movie." Are you excited to see "Mac & Devin Go to High School"? Tell us in the comments! The full list — including MTV's pick for the best movie of the year — will be announced during a live stream at 4:30 p.m. ET on Friday (December 16). Let's dwell for a minute on what exactly makes "Muppets" so darn special. For me, it begins and ends with fun: watching "Muppets" was the most pure fun I had at the movies all year. Add to that some great original songs and Segel's ability to rescue these characters from the pop-culture dustbin and give them new life, and I'm sold. A lot of people have said the film is a nostalgia trip — and they've meant that as a compliment. But I also think the movie stands on its own; it feels fresh and new, and even if you'd somehow never heard of the Muppets, you could still have a blast. Certainly, though, being a lifelong fan helps. 22. (Amber Rose and Wiz talk marriage on VMAs red carpet) By Henna Kathiya Over the next few years, Amber Rose is hoping to become a singer and a mother. The former video vixen is currently a spokesperson for Smirnoff Vodka, and a judge on BET’s Master of the Mix, but she’s also exploring an acting career, working on her sunglasses line, prepping her first solo single and hoping to start a family with Wiz Khalifa. The blonde beauty is pretty serious about her singing career, telling StyleCaster, "I showed Wiz some things I'd written down and he really encouraged me to pursue it. I'm taking this really seriously – I even quit smoking just so I could improve my voice." Amber knows that with a venture as daring as starting a singing career, she’ll have to deal with a few naysayers. She certainly doesn’t’ expect everyone to be on board with her dream. "I already know when the first single drops the haters will have their own opinions, but my fans (almost 900,000 strong on Twitter who she refers to as her "rosebuds" and "rosestuds") will be there for me,” she said. It doesn’t hurt that her boyfriend is a Grammy nominated rapper, and in addition to her musical ambition, Rose foresees a happy ending for her and Wiz. "Acting, making music, getting married, being with Wiz on a tour bus with a bunch of babies," she said. "I even want to write a romance novel. There's nothing I'm not afraid to try."
