2. By Talim Adderly While over in the U.K to perform on his Club Paradise tour, Drake loosened things up when he visited BBC Radio's 1Xtra host Tim Westwood. During his chat the Toronto rapper shared a pretty impressive impersonation of Lil Wayne, touching on Weezy's new Trukfit clothing line, while nailing down his mannerisms. “That’s my brother. I do it all in good fun.” Drake said, “That’s my idol, so I know everything.” Drake Admits To Sharing Girls With Lil Wayne In GQ Verse In case you are eagerly waiting for another impersonation from Drake, you could be waiting for a while. “Impersonations are my thing amongst my friends,” he told Westwood. The YMCMB poster child even offered the key ingredient to really nailing a true Lil Wayne impression. “You always have to get how he goes from happy to serious within like .5 seconds." Before wrapping the interview, in true Drake fashion he kicked a quick freestyle for Westwood, leaving us wondering, which female celebrity is he talking about this time.“This also for the hood stars that I created whose booking rate went up after we dated/ Girl, you made it for real,”he raps. 4. Music News By Ade Mangum (@hollywoodade) We're sure the Rihanna Navy and Team Breezy aren't too happy about the Chops & Hops sandwich of the week. A Watkinsville, Georgia restaurant named their “Black & Bleau” sandwich special in honor of the Chris Brown and Rihanna domestic violence incident that took place back in Febuary 2009, and the resulting fallout was to be expected. After fans of both singers voiced their displeasure with the sandwich, Chef Richard Miley told ABCNews, “I was not trying to make a joke of domestic violence, just bringing light to the situation through food.” The “Black and Bleu” is a ribeye sandwich topped with bleu cheese, tomatoes, onions and shredded romaine lettuce. The restaurant posted, “Put your hands on this Caribbean black and bleu sandwich,” on their Facebook page. They continued with “Chris Brown won’t beat you up for eating this unless your name starts with a R and ends with A.” The restaurant has been known to name “sandwich of the week” with poor taste. A few weeks back, they decided to pay tribute to the late singer Whitney Houston, with a sandwich topped with powdered sugar and sea salt. Who well be the next celebrity to fall victim, rather, honored by Chops & Hops as their next “sandwich of the week”? 7. Not all of the would-be kings of "Game of Thrones" season two are familiar faces. We love to hate Joffrey, and we love to love Robb, but there are other players in the mix who are simply too new to get an immediate read on. In our third day examining the War of the Five Kings, we're looking at one of the new characters vying for the Iron Throne... Know Your King "What's dead may never die." So speak the worshipers of the Drowned God of the Iron Islands. This area of Westeros is ruled by the cold and calculated Balon Greyjoy, yet another of the key players eyeballing a crown in season two of "Game of Thrones." Unlike his competition, however, Balon's a veteran when it comes to playing this particular game. Where Is He From? Balon and House Greyjoy make their home on Pyke of the Iron Islands of Westeros, just southwest of Winterfell and within striking distance of Lannisport and Casterly Rock. A seaborn warrior, Balon and his men are most at home on water, as made clear by the Iron Islands' considerable fleet. The King's Court Lord Greyjoy is surrounded by equally salty advisors. First and foremost is his daughter Yara, far from a damsel in distress -- think Arya, but grown up and a master of the sea. Balon also has brothers he can depend on to varying degrees: Aeron Damphair, the drowned prophet, is the first we'll meet, while the barbaric Victarion and trickster Euron are sure to come eventually. Another party soon to arrive at Pyke: Theon, ally of Robb Stark, estranged son of Balon Greyjoy. What Does He Do? More importantly is what he's already done. This is not Balon Greyjoy's first attempt at winning the Iron Throne. He previously rebelled against the crown and was crushed by the forces of Lord Eddard Stark, losing the lives of his two oldest sons in the process. As part of peace terms between Pyke and the Seven Kingdoms, Balon was forced to surrender his son Theon to Lord Stark's custody as a hostage -- a harsh term for a boy who was more or less raised as part of the Stark family. This history is crucial to understanding Balon and the way he treats the people around him, Theon especially. Do We Like Him? Not especially. He's a hard, willful man who is dead set on winning the Iron Throne. He won't negotiate, he won't make allies -- particularly not with Robb Stark, who he links to his own previously failed rebellion. The way he's able to influence Theon's loyalties, too, is a big strike against Balon Greyjoy. Tell us what you think of the would-be king in the comments section or on Twitter! View the full article
8. Last year the MPAA started a lawsuit against Hotfile, one of the Internet’s most popular cyberlocker services. The site’s popularity is “a direct result of the massive digital theft that Hotfile promotes,” the movie industry group said. In an effort to back up this claim, the movie studios hired statistician Richard Waterman to discover what percentage of the downloads that occur on the file-hoster are copyright-infringing. Waterman previously conducted similar studies for the RIAA’s lawsuit against LimeWire and that of the MPAA against isoHunt. Dr. Waterman’s report ultimately concluded that 90.2% of all daily downloads on Hotfile are infringing, opposed to 5.3% that are clearly non-infringing. Hotfile, however, felt that this report painted an inaccurate description of their daily activities and went on to hire an expert of their own to look into the validity of the report. The file-hoster commissioned Daniel Levy, Managing Director and founder of Advanced Analytical Consulting Group. His job was to evaluate how representative the MPAA-funded report is for the alleged infringements on Hotfile from the site’s inception up to the start of the lawsuit in January 2011. TorrentFreak managed to obtain a copy of this confidential report which tears the MPAA-funded study apart. The main conclusion of Dr. Levy is that the Waterman report gives “no scientifically reliable estimate of the incidence of allegedly infringing behavior through the Hotfile website.” According to Levy the 90.2% is based on a sample of downloads that is not representative for the total number of downloads that occur at Hotfile. Among other things the Waterman report excludes downloads from nearly half of the world’s Internet users. Downloads via so-called Hotlinks are also omitted, and downloads of files that were submitted by anonymous users were not counted either. “Dr. Waterman has provided no reliable scientific evidence about the overall population of downloads from the Hotfile website during any time period,” is Levy’s conclusion. Aside from the claim that the evidence is unreliable, Levy also notes that the Waterman report overlooks the fact that Hotfile is also used for purposes other than downloading alone. As is common for all storage services, a large percentage of files are used for backup and are never downloaded by the public. “Dr. Waterman has investigated only one aspect of how users employ Hotfile. He has not investigated the storage, file security and backup or single users’ file transfer across locations or devices for self use. Dr. Waterman has not investigated the alleged infringement behavior across the uses of Hotfile,” Levy writes. Based on the same downloads source as the MPAA used, 54 percent of all files uploaded to Hotfile are never downloaded at all. This is indeed an important distinction to make, but not a flaw in Dr. Waterman’s report as that only looked into actual downloads. In sum, the Hotfile funded report clearly reveals some issues in the MPAA study which may overestimate the actual infringement on Hotfile. However, whether the “real” percentage of infringing downloads will be lower is impossible to tell. The MPAA and Dr. Waterman have let the court know that they still stand behind the report, and it’s now up to the judge to decide how to use it. To be continued. 15. It seems like every time I go online I see another news article or blog comparing “The Hunger Games” to “Star Wars.” I get it: they both made a lot of money and they both have trilogies. But that’s all the similarity I see. Don’t get me wrong, I like “The Hunger Games.” I’ve read all the books and I liked the movie, a lot. But Suzanne Collins is no George Lucas, and “The Hunger Games” is no “Star Wars.” And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Here are just a few of the many ways “The Hunger Games” differs from “Star Wars”: 1. We all know that “Star Wars” takes place “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.” Collins’ story happens in the future, but right here at home – a North America that somewhere along the way is renamed Panem. 2. The main protagonist of “The Hunger Games” is a young girl - Katniss Everdeen - who, from the start of the story, asserts her individuality, independence and willingness to rebel against authority. Obviously there’s a rebellion in “Star Wars” too, but I see it more as a team of heroes facing a tyrannical enemy rather than one main character leading a revolution. 3. “The Hunger Games” is very much a social commentary, not just a good vs. evil, hero’s journey to redemption story. A major theme in THG is society’s obsession with celebrity, and that’s nowhere to be found in the “Star Wars” films. 4. “The Hunger Games” was a trilogy of novels before Hollywood came calling. With “Star Wars,” of course, the films came first, then everything else. This may seem like an inconsequential detail, but it’s really not. Filmed adaptations will always be scrutinized for faithfulness to their printed predecessors. George Lucas didn’t have to deal with that. 5. And speaking of George… despite his faults and detractors, there’s no denying he’s become a true legend in popular culture for what he created. “Star Wars” was groundbreaking in so many ways. The fact that this column is being written, three and a half decades after the original film hit theaters, is just one testament to that fact. Will we still be talking (and bickering) about Suzanne Collins thirty or forty years from now? I wish “The Hunger Games” all the best, and I look forward to seeing the second and third installments of the trilogy. But to say that it’s this generation’s “Star Wars” is just plain wrong – no generation will see a phenomenon that comes close to “Star Wars.” And that’s fine by me. In The Comlink, "Star Wars" fan and MTV News producer Tami Katzoff explores the glory days of a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Whether you're Team Jedi or Team Sith, friend of Wookiees or wanted by bounty hunters, any and all "Star Wars" fans are welcome along for the ride. View the full article
16. By Rob Markman with reporting by Sway Calloway Early in January Nas made headlines when a concert promoter claimed that the Queens rapper skipped out on a scheduled show in Angola, Africa which led to the promoter and his son being kidnapped. The notoriously reserved MC declined to comment on the reports at the time, but during this Wednesday's episode of "RapFix Live"--which will be streamed at 4p.m. ET on MTV.com-- he finally explained his side of the story. The promoter was returned home safely to New Jersey on February 19. TMZ broke the story January 3 and reported that Patrick Allocco and his son, whom he works with, were kidnapped by local Africa promoter Henrique "Riquhino" Miguel after Nas and an opening act failed to perform at a New Year's Eve concert in Angola. Allocco's reps told TMZ that Nas and opening act Jemiah Jai were paid to perform two shows but failed to board their flights. Once Miguel realized that Nas wasn't going to perform, he sent his people to take Allocco and his son into custody at gunpoint. Nas eventually returned the $300,000 that was paid to him, and Allocco was released and allowed to return back to the U.S. Now, Esco is ready to open up. "Basically he was a promoter that I never worked with, and he wanted me to come to Africa for New Year's, which, for me, I thought, would be the best way to spend New Year's. The business wasn't handled. There was nothing sent to me, and there were no flights," he said. "By the time he did send money — he did eventually send money to me — but it was too late to go. I didn't even have a visa to get in the country. So that's canceled, the show's canceled." Allocco, who is now contemplating litigation, has a differing account, contending that everything was in place for Nas to travel to Africa. "Nothing could be further from the truth," Allocco told MTV News of Nas' version of the story. "Nas put us in harm's way by not showing up and put my son and I at physical harm and at risk by his inaction to fly to Angola." "That was just all wrong. Any time I'm supposed to go to Africa, it happens," Nas said on "RapFix Live." "When people take care of business, it happens. ... You booked the flight but no return flight. I didn't have a visa, and you didn't send money till after I was supposed to jump on the plane to another country, and that's just the way it went down." Catch Nas, Killer Mike, Bun B and Prodigy on a special episode of"RapFix Live" today at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, when all four esteemed lyricists will address the tragic shooting death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin and more. 17. by Ryan Rigley "Evil is cumulative. It happens." Ralph Fiennes is, without a doubt, a man who knows his way around evil. Playing a number of villain roles throughout his ever expanding acting career, Fiennes has seemingly become the go to guy when it comes to dastardly doings and depravity. It's no wonder that the English theater and film actor will be reprising his role of Hades, Lord of the Underworld, in the upcoming "Clash of the Titans" sequel. "Wrath of the Titans" once again shows Hades playing a very important, antagonistic part of the story. After making a deal with Kronos, his father, Hades kidnaps Zeus and holds him prisoner in the Underworld, draining him of his godly powers and transferring them to the almighty Titans back on Earth. It's up to Perseus, Sam Worthington, to rescue Zeus and stop the Titans once and for all. Being Lord of the Underworld is no easy task, but at this point, Ralph Fiennes has that evil mindset down to a science. Here's a look at some of Mr. Fiennes' most evil movie roles. » Victor Quartermaine ("Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit") Famed hunter and suitor of the 7th Lady of Scotland, Quartermaine only loves Lady Campanula Tottington for her money. Utilizing his prized high caliber bolt-actioned hunting rifle, Quartermaine prefers to get rid of pests the old fashioned way. He also hunts for sport, much to the dismay of Wallace and Gromit (who are both humane and environmentally friendly). » Rameses ("Prince Of Egypt") Based on the Biblical story of Moses, Rameses plays the role of the Pharaoh that opposes and enslaves the Hebrews. In the movie, Rameses and Moses were raised as brothers with Rameses taking the throne after the death of his father. Determined to create a legacy that his father could be proud of, Ramses forces the Hebrews to build a great temple in his name with barely any rest or nourishment. » Voldemort ("Harry Potter") Fiennes' role as He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named proved once again that the actor has exactly what it takes to haunt children's nightmares. J.K. Rowling has described Voldemort as "the most evil wizard for hundreds and hundreds of years" and a "raging psychopath, devoid of the normal human responses to other people's suffering." Which makes sense, being as he's famous for trying to kill a baby. » Francis Dollarhyde ("Red Dragon") Nicknamed the "Tooth Fairy" because of the habitual biting of his victims' bodies, Francis Dollarhyde is an insane serial killer with unnaturally sharp teeth. His other personality, the "Red Dragon," is a brutal and sadistic maniac that will record himself killing someone, molest their corpse, and then masturbate to the tape of the murder that he has just committed. Pretty messed up stuff. » Amon Goeth ("Schindler's List") One of the most memorable scenes in this movie involves Fiennes standing on the balcony of the commandmant's base and shooting innocent Jews for fun. Based on a real-life Nazi war criminal of the same name, Goeth was responsible for the death of tens of thousands of people. Believing that the Jews should have to pay for their own executions, Goeth ordered the Jewish Council to give the Gestapo enough money to cover the expenses for the ammunition used to murder them. 22. By Elizabeth Lancaster Got 5 dollars? Because that’s all it will cost to see Lil B at New York University next week. The creator of the #based hash tag wants to continue to enlighten the world, as his appearance will not be a performance, but actually a lecture. Only NYU students can attend, to the sure disappointment of most New Yorkers (and recent NYU graduates) but we assume there will be multiple live-tweeting students in the audience to keep the world up to speed. While this might seem like an unlikely match, it actually makes sense from both ends. NYU hired Swizz Beatz last year as Producer-in-Residence at the Clive Davis School of Recorded Music, and the school also offers a highly desired course called “Leaders in Music: Jay-Z.” As for Lil B the Based God loves to spread his word, even titling one of his recent singles “I Got AIDS” to encourage his fans to be tested for HIV. The rapper/activist told RapFix, “I have a lot of songs that have sexual lyrics, and I want to tell people the truth about sexuality and to make sure that they get tested if they’re sexually active.” The social media king took to Twitter to explain his new gig, writing, “the reason why i am having my first rare lecture at NYU university is because I specialize in the progression of human race.” Well there you have it. Besides that, there are no details on what Lil B will be discussing, although it might have something to do with promoting the mixtape he recently released. To quote him, he hopes to have “Swag like Sexton.” Don’t we all? **Still TBD if Won Ton soup will be served at dining halls that day in his honor. RiRi, of course, gained plenty of attention while traveling with a group of friends in her black leather thigh-high boots and a black shirt with flames on it through the city's Waterloo Station. Drake, Rihanna Get Close On 'Take Care' Video Set Seems like Rihanna prefers riding the tube to save time claiming that traffic is always a factor, “There’s so much traffic. It’s approximately an hour-and-a-half to the O2 every time…I hate waking up early and I’m always late, so the tube is like 10 minutes," she told interviewer Jonathan Ross recently. With such a busy schedule, who could blame her for trying to save some time? The 24-year-old star recently landed in London to shoot promotion for her upcoming film "Battleship," after visiting New York City where she visited Beyonce and Blue Ivy. Rihanna Is Geisha Goth For Coldplay's 'Princess Of China' Video Earlier this week, she revealed photos from the video set of Coldplay's “Princess of China” and the video for her "Take Care" collaboration with Drake is expected to drop any day now. According to the video's director Yoann Lemoine, the clip is one of the most indie pieces he's ever shot. Lemoine has high expectations for the video as does Drake who told MTV News back in December , "I want to make it perfect — the best video I've done to date — so I'm just taking my time.” After the concert, Rihanna hung with Drake and crew at Low nightclub in London. The pair were spotted leaving together in the early morning hours. View the full article
24. With "The Hunger Games" dominating theaters last weekend and "Game of Thrones" heralding its highly-anticipated return to the small screen this weekend, we're smack dab in the middle of some of the best adaptations we've had the pleasure to watch in recent years. The studios behind them -- Lionsgate and HBO, respectively -- clearly put a lot of thought and effort into translating the books to screen, and audiences have responded well to both. In honor of both series' successes, we've put together a handy dandy list of suggestions for other upcoming adaptations to pay attention to if they want to be as well-received as "The Hunger Games" and "Game of Thrones." Hopefully these two franchises can herald a new generation of great adaptations, since Hollywood seems so hell-bent on making them. Don't cast a big star for your main character Jennifer Lawrence and Emilia Clarke (or Kit Harington or Maisie Williams or Richard Madden) were far from household names before they were cast in "The Hunger Games" and "Game of Thrones," respectively. But they're strong actors who have become big since the movie/show began because of their talent, which is a sure sign that a lot of effort went into making sure the casting was correct. Instead of blowing giant paychecks for a big name star to draw an audience, make sure the talent is there and the audience will come to you. If you deviate from the source material, do it well Both "The Hunger Games" and "Game of Thrones" have changed and added to the story, and they've done so in a way that is organic to the source material. Every scene in the Game Room with Seneca Crane or meet up between Varys and Littlefinger feels like it's something that could have come off the page, even though it didn't. If every other adaptation took half as much care with the alterations it makes, then we wouldn't have quite as many bad adaptations or complaining fans on our hands. Don't be afraid to kill a main character Eddard Stark, we miss you so. But "Game of Thrones" showed its true colors by offing you, the show's seeming main character, before the first season even ended. Anyone can die! As Arya says, no one is safe! "Hunger Games" isn't quite as brutal, but the story is also never afraid to off someone who is an integral part of the series. By making an audience feel less safe liking a franchise's main character, it makes the stakes seem much higher. Don't skimp on the budget, but don't break the bank Neither "Game of Thrones" nor "The Hunger Games" were particularly cheap to make, and that comes through in both franchises' great sets and productions. By putting in the money to make both series look great, they also felt a lot more realistic and relatable. On the other hand, though, neither "Game of Thrones" nor "The Hunger Games" were so expensive that they put their respective studios out of business (or close to it) like other similar series' "Rome" and "The Golden Compass" did. Trust your audience The most important thing that both "Game of Thrones" and "The Hunger Games" do is trust that their audiences aren't idiots. Seriously. So many adaptations play down to their viewers, explaining every last tidbit of information to make sure that the people watching will keep up. Well, don't. Trust that the audience will be able to follow your trail of breadcrumbs if you leave it out for them, and don't insult their intelligence by thinking they aren't clever enough to figure out what's going on on the big (or small) screen. 25. Whitney Houston's ex-husband, Bobby Brown, was arrested in California on Monday (March 26) under suspicion of driving under the influence, but he has since been released from the Van Nuys jail where he was being held. Initial reports claimed that Brown was driving "erratically" while speaking on a cell phone, but a new statement from his lawyer confirms that Brown has not been convicted. Bobbi Kristina Wants Name Change To Separate From Bobby Brown "Everyone is innocent until proven guilty and Mr. Brown was not driving erratically," Brown's attorney Tiffany Feder told E! News in a statement. "He was speaking on his cell phone. Mr. Brown has not been convicted of anything associated with this incident." "Mr. Brown is taking this matter seriously and an investigation is under way," Feder added. "The legal process shall run its course." Brown was stopped by police in Reseda, CA at 12:20PM after he was seen talking on his cell phone. News of his arrest comes just days after a coroner’s report revealed the cause of death for his ex-wife Whitney Houston. His previous run-ins with the law includes a 1996 DUI conviction in Georgia, which landed him 8 days in jail after pleading guilty, in addition to a 2003 arrest for battery and a parole violation charge in 2004 which landed him in jail. The 43-year-old is the father of Whitney Houston's only child, 19-year-old Bobbi Kristina. View the full article
