  2. As if the original animated classic wasn't heartbreakingly morbid enough, Hollywood's decided 'Bambi' needs more than one hyperrealistic version, too. Oh, and why not make one a horror movie where the animated woodland creature is a vicious killing machine? The horror revenge tale, currently titled Bambi: The Reckoning, is helmed by the same mind behind the nightmare-image filled live-action Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, Rhys Frake-Waterfield. According to Dread Central, Frake-Waterfield will be partnering with director Scott Jeffrey, who said the movie's creature design is inspired by the 2017 film The Ritual — a Netflix-distributed movie about a group of men hunted by a terrifying monster while hiking through the Swedish wilderness. SEE ALSO: How one line in 'Strange World' shows Disney is finally getting queer representation right "The film will be an incredibly dark retelling of the 1928 story we all know and love," Jeffrey told Dread Central. "Prepare for Bambi on rabies!" Disney is also working on a live-action retelling of the 1923 book and its 1942 movie adaptation, Vulture reported, but its hold on the deer was relinquished as the film moved into the public domain at the beginning of this year. Ever wanted to know what Bambi would be like if — instead of processing his grief and falling in love alongside bunny rabbits in meadows full of flowers — the orphaned animal just went beast mode and killed all the hunters? Then this one is for you, I guess. Production is set to begin in January. View the full article
  3. Last week, the U.S. Department of Justice unsealed the indictment and complaint against two alleged operators of Z-Library. Following an FBI investigation, the authorities identified Russian nationals Anton Napolsky and Valeriia Ermakova as prime suspects. The pair were arrested in Argentina and now await potential extradition to the United States. There’s little doubt that Z-Library helped to distribute millions of copyrighted books. Publishers have been aware of this for a long time and urged law enforcement to take action. While it was the US Department of Justice that ultimately took action, these large-scale operations often rely on international cooperation. In some cases this is evident; when Argentinian authorities helped to arrest the two suspects, for example. BREIN Pinpointed Z-Library Suspects Most instances of information sharing take place behind the scenes so are not immediately visible. For example, Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN indirectly contributed to the recent actions against Z-Library. Without an announcement, that’s unlikely to have seen the light of day. “The [Z-Library] investigation and action relied on multiple sources, including an extensive report by BREIN from 2020,” the anti-piracy group wrote this week. This statement piqued our interest. To find out more we reached out to the anti-piracy group to ask for more details on the report’s content. According to BREIN director Tim Kuik, the information wasn’t shared with the authorities directly. “We sent our report to relevant publishers, not directly to US authorities,” Kuik clarifies. The report is not publicly available but Kuik says it included information about several Z-Library suspects, which proved useful to US authorities. “[The report] outlined the domains and identified a number of suspects involved. We understand we were one of several sources of information. As is usual law enforcement authorities will do their own investigation before taking action,” Kuik tells us. At the time, BREIN had already taken action against Z-Library. The site was disconnected by its Dutch hosting company following a complaint from the anti-piracy group. It then relocated to another country where it continued its activities. Comeback Will Have Consequences Two years later, BREIN’s report assisted the criminal investigation that led to the prosecution of two defendants. In addition, more than 240 domain names were seized by U.S. law enforcement, effectively wiping the site from the regular ‘surface’ web. Z-Library hasn’t thrown the towel completely though. Despite some technical issues earlier this week, it remains accessible on the Tor network. In addition, it’s still operating on the peer-to-peer I2P service. How many Z-Library team members are still in place is unknown. The site published a blog post last weekend, asking authors for forgiveness, but there’s no indication that it will throw the towel. BREIN is aware of these developments and says that it’s keeping an eye on things. If Z-Library returns to the surface web, the group plans to obtain a court order to have their domains blocked by Dutch ISPs. These are tough words but they also beg a question: why doesn’t BREIN request blocking orders for other large shadow libraries right away? After all, there’s no shortage of book piracy sites. While there are no blocking requests active right now, BREIN’s director says that other book piracy sites could also be targeted in the future. “Any structurally infringing site eventually will become subject to a blocking order if it persists in its illegal activities,” Kuik adds. 4. The "internet's town square" is losing some of its billboards, as half of Twitter's top advertisers have reportedly pulled out of the social media platform after Elon Musk's acquisition. According to a report by Media Matters for America, a nonprofit media research organization and "misinformation monitor", 50 of the top 100 advertisers have fled the app in the wake of the billionaire's decision to "revamp" the site. As of Nov. 21, the brands accounted for almost "$2 billion in spending on the platform since 2020, and over $750 million in advertising in 2022 alone," adding to a general downward shift in advertising dollars. An additional seven major brands, totaling $118 million of ad spending in 2022, have significantly slowed advertising. SEE ALSO: Elon Musk says there will be three 'verified' Twitter checkmarks: blue, gold, and grey The majority of brands are what the organization has labeled "quiet quitters," pulling out or subtly reducing their ad spending without a public announcement. Others, like Chevrolet, Chipotle, Ford, Jeep, and others, have issued statements on their departure. Big brands have been reckoning with Musk's changes and controversial statements for weeks. Earlier this month, global corporate advertising agencies recommended that many of their largest clients pause spending for Twitter ads, including Omnicom Media (an agency representing big names like Apple, Mercedes-Benz, and McDonald's). Other brands, like Volkswagen, General Motors, and General Mills, also suspended all Twitter ad spending. Individuals and companies alike are leaving their accounts behind, like Broadway-beloved Playbill. SEE ALSO: Elon Musk says there will be three 'verified' Twitter checkmarks: blue, gold, and grey In a Q&A via Twitter Spaces on Nov. 9, Musk sidestepped the concerns of wary advertisers, insisting that nothing "bad" would soil the advertisements of major brands and that advertising would have heightened relevancy to users. “We all kind of work hard to make sure that there’s not bad stuff right next to an ad," Musk said. That line of thinking, obviously, has not been entirely successful. And the failed rollout of Twitter's "democratized" blue check has had an even greater impact on brand images, as impersonated accounts wreaked havoc on companies' social media presences and stock market standings. Musk's stance on the new Twitter environment has been one of complaint and blame-throwing. "A large coalition of political/social activist groups agreed not to try to kill Twitter by starving us of advertising revenue if I agreed to this condition," he tweeted. "They broke the deal." 6. SAVE $50: The Epson Home Cinema 1080 3LCD 1080p Projector is down to $699.99 on Dell on Nov. 26 thanks to a $50 discount. You also receive a $75 Dell gift card with your purchase. While the drive-in movie industry has been steadily on the decline for years, there is a way to revive some of that outdoor movie magic. If you are looking to renovate your backyard to bring back the good ol' days, you need a decent projector to complete the experience. The Epson Home Cinema 1080 3LCD 1080p Projector is down to $699.99, which is $50 lower than its MSRP on Dell. While Walmart is selling it for over double the price at $1020, Epson's website is matching the price set by Dell. However, Dell is also offering a $75 Promo eGift card for free with this deal (with certain website-based caveats), thus making this the sweater option in the bunch. Epson is highly-rated amongst projector brands, and its 2100 model made it to Mashable's list of top outdoor projectors as the "Best Overall Pick." While the 1080 version is not as powerful, it is a great value for its money. This projector is equipped with 3400 Lumens of color and white brightness, which is the most in Epson's home cinema projector series. It can project a screen size of up to 300 inches, making it an immersive experience for an entire classroom of students or for an office presentation. Furthermore, this projector provides both vertical and horizontal keystone adjustments of up to 30 degrees, which is great for adjusting the lens of the projector depending on the angle of the casting surface to prevent any optical errors or illusions. With the Full HD image resolution (1920x1080) of displayed images, a 2W built-in speaker, and support for over a billion colors on the spectrum, this projector feels like the complete package. The 1080 model has certain benefits over the 880 model, which is also a part of our best Black Friday deals. It has stronger color and white brightness as well as an additional HDMI port. But one major trick up its sleeve is its Miracast projection feature. This technology allows you to mirror content being displayed on your phone or laptop to your Epson 1080 projector without requiring any additional cables or an active WiFi connection. This year, we've unlocked a new thing to navigate as we shop for the holidays during Cyber Week: inflation. But if there's anything retailers have learned since the pandemic, it's how to provide cushion for shoppers who are budgeting extra hard during these tight times. Mostly, that looks like stretching Black Friday deals across the entire month of November — and in some cases, a little bit of October, too. For Cyber Monday, some retailers started releasing deals as early as Black Friday. (Yeah, let that sink in.) Below, you'll find a complete list of all the holiday doorbusters that are live right now (with sales grouped by retailer, category, and brand), plus the start of official Cyber Monday sales. Like much of this shopping season, things have run together a bit due to the overlapping nature of the sales at each merchant. We're holding out hope that some retailers have reserved some deals for Cyber Monday (crossing our fingers for the Xbox Series S to drop even lower) but only time will tell if we actually see better deals or if it's much of the same. We will continue to update this post as more Cyber Monday deals pop up during the weekend and through the actual day, but don't hold out too long if something on your shopping list is enjoying a discount — most retailers are saying screw it and dropping deals earlier than ever before. revived its popular Black Friday Deals for Days event from 2020, this time dropping new deals every Monday in November. Each event kicked off at 7 p.m. ET and continued into stores a few days later, though Walmart+ members got access beginning at noon that day — crucial leverage for items that are at risk of selling out. Walmart will go out with a bang with one final Cyber Monday deals event on Nov. 28, the details of which went live on Black Friday. That October announcement also showed how Best Buy is planning to offer Black Friday deals "almost every week" until its main event in November. Any current deals at Cyber Monday prices will be clearly marked as such, and if anything you bought there earlier this month happens to be cheaper now, you'll get a refund under the Black Friday Price Guarantee. The 2022 MacBook Air comes at a slightly higher starting price than its 2020 counterpart, but for a few good reasons. One, it underwent a total redesign that gives it a more Pro-like look, while still maintaining the thin look the Air is known for. The keyboard is miles better than the Butterfly monstrosity, and you also get a full-sized function role. We wish its 60Hz refresh rate offered a little more, but the M2 chip gives top-of-the-line performance. And that slightly larger 13.6-inch screen and 1080p webcam make a difference. (If you're looking for more built-in storage space, the 512GB model is also at its lowest price ever.) Even with the release of iPadOS 16, let's be real — no one is really using their iPad as a complete laptop replacement. When it comes down to it, most people want a tablet to be portable, to stream shows and videos easily, maybe run some creative work, and not run out of battery quickly. The iPad Mini checks pretty much most of those boxes. For casual use, the battery does well, but the A15 Bionic chip brings the speed (you don't need an M1 or M2 chip to play games and watch YouTube). The 8.3-inch display is compact without being way too small, the USB-C charging port adds a level of convenience the iPhone would be well suited to follow, and the stereo speakers sound great. All these factors together make it clear why this tablet is a Mashable Choice pick — and a great deal to boot. Opting instead for last year's Series 7 still gets a large, bright, always-on, crack-resistant display. In terms of fitness features, you get blood oxygen and ECG sensors, as well as a heart rate monitor. You won't get the crash detection and temperature sensors of the Series 8, but if those weren't must-have features for you anyway, saving at least $70 and going for the Series 7 is the move. But with a new generation out and Black Friday sales beginning, the first-gen AirPods Pro are back down to their lowest price ever at $159. If you're interested in the idea of the ANC of the AirPods Pros but less interested in their price tag, the Beats Studio Buds offer a worthy alternative. The ANC might not quite match up to the Pros standard, but with 8 hours of battery life per charge (that's longer than the second-gen Pros) and impressive bass for buds, you might just find them worth the trade-off. While it's primarily a video editing and graphics workstation, this $400 discount at Best Buy makes it more affordable for everyday laptop users. (At the time of writing, it's sitting at $300 more at Amazon.) Released at the end of 2021, the 14-inch MacBook Pro uses the 70 percent faster M1 Pro silicon chip, includes an updated Liquid Retina XDR display, a 1080p FaceTime camera, a MagSafe power cable, more ports, and the return of physical function keys. The cheaper one, the Q5+, skips mopping functionality, but still uses LiDAR to map your home layout, cleans with impressive 2,700 Pa suction, and empties itself. It's an even bigger deal that it's on sale less than two months after launching in late Sept. 2022. Now under $900 instead of over $1,000, the Combo j7+ uses the same PrecisionNavigation camera as the regular j7+ to recognize and avoid particularly-problematic obstacles like pet waste and phone chargers. When the Combo j7+ notices carpet, it stops scrubbing and lifts the mop completely over the vacuum itself. When cleaning is complete, the Combo j7+ empties itself. It's not unrealistic for retailers to devote 10 (or more) pages to TV deals in their official Black Friday ad scans. But each year, it's becoming less and less necessary to use those ad scans as a means of previewing what you'll actually buy on Black Friday — because early deals have been live for weeks. In 2022, stores like Best Buy, Target, and Walmart began casually dropping Black Friday TV deals as early as mid-October, complete with that store's version of a Black Friday price guarantee to ensure that waiting isn't wiser. As always, Best Buy is looking to be the number one TV destination, already offering countless TVs between 43- and 85-inches at Black Friday pricing. Samsung has also gotten a head start by putting almost every size of The Frame at Black Friday pricing weeks before the official shopping holiday. 10. There's a new rocket in town. In a historic launch, NASA's new Space Launch System (SLS) rocket blasted a spacecraft to the moon on Nov. 16, becoming the most powerful operational rocket around today. Its boosters create significantly more thrust than the legendary Saturn V rocket, which launched the first astronauts to the moon over 50 years ago. The space agency plans to use SLS to build a permanent presence on and around the moon. NASA has released dramatic footage of the megarocket's recent flight into space, from a camera aboard the rocket. In the video below you can see events at just over two minutes into the journey from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Strapped to the side of the rocket's core orange-colored booster are two powerful, white side boosters. These are integral parts of the vehicle, because they provide 75 percent of SLS's thrust, or force pushing down against Earth, during the first couple of minutes that SLS speeds through the atmosphere. But after they've spent their fuel, the boosters dramatically (though safely) blast away from the rest of the rocket, which includes the Orion spacecraft that sits atop SLS. SEE ALSO: Why landing a spaceship on the moon is still so challenging These two boosters, standing at 17 stories tall, are potent. "These are the largest solid boosters ever built," John Blevins, the chief engineer for NASA's SLS rocket, told Mashable earlier this year. "These are the largest solid boosters ever built." After the boosters fell away to the Atlantic Ocean, the rocket's orange booster, fitted with four RS-25 engines (which also powered NASA's Space Shuttles), continued to propel the SLS rocket beyond Earth. Eventually, the Orion spacecraft broke away from this last booster and blasted its own engines on a trajectory towards the moon. On this mission, called Artemis I, there is no crew. But if the spacecraft successfully completes a complex series of orbits around the moon and then safely survives an extreme 5,000 degree Fahrenheit plummet through Earth's atmosphere, then future astronauts will fly on the next mission, Artemis II. Artemis II could fly as early as 2024. By 2025 (though likely later), astronauts may once again step foot on the moon. Want more science and tech news delivered straight to your inbox? Sign up for Mashable's Top Stories newsletter today. Artemis is NASA's mission to establish a permanent presence on the inhospitable lunar surface. NASA and commercial companies may one day harvest water ice for survival and making fuel there, allowing for the deeper exploration of space. And SLS is the powerful "pickup truck" that will carry many of these missions — at least for the next decade or so — beyond Earth, and towards the moon. View the full article
  11. While most of us have a smartphone glued to our hands that can easily shoot an endless number of high-quality photos on the go, more and more people are returning to a style of photography that our parents and grandparents grew up with: instant film cameras. We take so many digital photos with our phones, but we've moved so far away from having physical photos that we can display in the real world. Part of that is because real film cameras are a lot less convenient to carry around, and they have a greater learning curve to use properly. They also require you to bring your film to get developed, and then (*gasp*) wait days before those physical photos are ready to pick up and take home. Even simple point-and-shoot digital cameras still require you to upload your photos online and send them off to get printed by a service, like Shutterfly (aka more waiting). But in a tech-forward world where everything we do seems to be centered around instant gratification, it actually makes a lot of sense that we'd be drawn back to instant film cameras that allow a photograph to go from point to shoot to print in a matter of seconds. What is an instant film camera and how does it work?To put it simply, an instant film camera is designed with its own little internal developing studio in which all the mechanisms necessary to develop the instant film exist. These instant film cameras must be outfitted with self-developing film, which removes the need for you to develop the film yourself or bring it someplace where it can be developed for you. Instant film cameras are also typically very easy to use, with simple buttons and minimal features so beginners can jump in with very little experience needed. In more technical terms, the self-developing film in an instant camera typically contains several layers sandwiched together — with dye, developer, etc. — which contain all the necessary chemicals for the photo development process. These layers are arranged in a way that essentially sets off a chemical reaction once you shoot an image and tell the camera to print it. Then, the printed photograph is ejected from the camera, though you may need to wait a few seconds or even minutes for the image to fully develop. The first and most famous of these instant film cameras was (and still is) known as a Polaroid camera. In fact, most people still refer to instant film cameras and their resulting photographs as "Polaroids" regardless of the camera brand. Today's Polaroid cameras are a bit more advanced than those of the past (i.e., original Polaroids took up to 15 minutes to develop), and many competitor brands create photographs that develop much quicker than the original camera. What types of instant film cameras are there? One of those competitors is Fujifilm, whose Instax cameras tend to rule the market with a whole line of instant film cameras to choose from. Regardless of the brand, however, most instant film cameras work the same way, though there are some variations in terms of creative control (i.e., adjustable exposure, interchangeable lenses, etc.). Also, keep in mind that some instant film cameras run on replaceable batteries, while others are rechargeable via USB cable. That said, the biggest difference between the vast array of instant film cameras on the market is the size of the photographs that they print. The aforementioned Instax film lineup alone contains film sizes ranging from mini to square to wide. Then there are other brands, like Polaroid and some Kodak cameras, that print a more classic Polaroid-style photo that is a bit larger in size. It should also be noted that some instant film cameras allow you to review your photo before it is printed, ensuring that you only use your self-developing film on the pictures that you really love. Others, however, automatically print every picture you snap — even if you blinked or got photobombed or just didn't look as immaculate as you wished. (Though there is definitely something to be said for capturing moments exactly as they happen, unfiltered and unedited — like the tangible equivalent of BeReal.) Is instant film expensive? While we're on the topic of film and how quickly it can be used up depending on the camera type, it should be noted that instant film can get a little pricey. Each instant camera brand typically only works with its own brand of instant film — and in the case of the Instax line, the film specifications narrow even further. (For example, an Instax Mini can't use Instax Square film, and vice versa, even though they're both Instax films made by Fujifilm.) Some brands are a little more expensive than others, but you should generally expect to pay about fifty to sixty cents per photo. Buying multiple film packs in bulk, however, will bring that cost down significantly — as long as you know this is a hobby you'll keep up for a while. But, keep in mind that instant film can expire! So don't expect to go too wild with those bulk film packs either. Some brands' instant film has adhesive on the back so you can use the printed photos as stickers. Some instant film allows the photo to fill the film edge-to-edge, while others have a white border around the image like classic Polaroid camera photos. Or, if you want to get even fancier, you can opt for instant film with colorful borders (like this rainbow-colored film from Instax) — though that’ll cost you more per photo. Are instant film cameras worth it?There's an instant film camera for every budget and shooting style, so they can be really fun to play around with, whether you're a casual photographer taking glamor shots of your pets or a seasoned pro seeking a new outlet for your photographic creativity. The small pictures are fun to use for scrapbooking and photo albums, and they allow for a really awesome and creative way to add some personalized decor to any space. (And you don’t need to be a teenage girl to appreciate these mini-sized portraits, either.) These nostalgic cameras are also a fun addition to parties and special celebrations to allow guests to instantly bring home memories in the palms of their hands. That said, instant film cameras can get a little pricey — even if you opt for the most budget-friendly option — because you'll need to continuously replenish it with more instant film. But, as long as you keep that extra cost in mind, instant film cameras are certainly worth a shot. (Photography pun most definitely intended.) View the full article
  12. Whether you want to or not, Nanny will force you to slow down. In this beautiful and twisted horror story, West-African immigrant and nanny Aisha (the riveting Anna Diop) is hired by a wealthy white couple, Amy and Adam (Michelle Monaghan and Morgan Spector), whose relationship is awkward enough to make you squirm in your seat. While she cares for their young, mischievous daughter, Rose (Rose Decker), hoping to earn enough to bring her son, Lamine (Jahleel Kamara), to the U.S., Aisha is haunted by intense visions that rattle her consciousness and distort the 'American Dream' she had in mind. SEE ALSO: 11 films from the Sundance Film Festival you need to know about With its stunning imagery and textured shots, it’s easy to get lost in the cinematic world director/producer Nikyatu Jusu expertly crafts in Nanny. But as you become absorbed in this dreamy landscape, even deeper layers and allegories unfold. Don't drown in wonder. Let's dive into this movie's melancholic, luminous, and shocking ending to explore what it all means. Let's talk Mami Wata and Anansi the Spider. Credit: Amazon Studios Mami Wata and Anansi the Spider make a splash in Nanny as the hidden figures that guide Aisha on her rocky journey. Mami Wata, an indigenous West-African water spirit, is a guiding ancestral force throughout the African diaspora most respected for her ability to give fortune and to destroy. Her presence in the film serves to champion the sacred nature of water, making a continuous appearance in Aisha’s dreams and fantasies. Anansi is portrayed throughout African folktales as a clever trickster; his stories are oftentimes warnings to stay ahead of the current, never letting it undertake you. Blurring the lines of reality and fantasy, the spiritual figures make it their mission to communicate with Aisha through various forms as she attempts to multitask her heavy workload with her spirituality. These two whimsical yet cunning forces stealthily steal the show without garnering much attention as they rapidly sweep Aisha into a stream of psychological displacement. What do the water and rain imagery mean? Credit: Amazon Studios As Aisha begins to spend more time within her client's posh New York home, it’s evident that the residence is a space of discomfort, not fortitude. Viewers might notice the shifting palette of Aisha's wardrobe as she moves from work to free time. When partying with friends in Harlem, she sports bright yellows and oranges. But within the sprawling Upper West Side apartment of her wealthy, entitled employers, she sticks to dull pigments and hues of blue. Aisha's outfit choices convey either a sense of belonging and joy or exile and oppression. As Amy and Adam take advantage of Aisha's labor through volatile passive-aggressive attacks on her culture, financial negligence, and even sexual harassment, the highly-driven nanny gradually loses her grip on reality, slipping into multiple states of consciousness. SEE ALSO: You'll need to be trained in self-defence if you want a shot at this £100K-a-year nanny job Rainwater becomes recurring imagery in the film, hitting in light showers, threatening flooding, and hallucinations of drowning, all of which chip away at Aisha’s mental state. These dreams start subtle, serving as an entry-level warning from Mami Wata and Anansi for Aisha to get her head back in the game. As the nightmarish visions begin to leak into her waking life, it becomes increasingly difficult for the protagonist — and us — to determine what's real. The soft drips lead to hauntings of extreme waterboarding that completely take Aisha under the current. The climactic break comes to a silencing halt when Aisha breaks out of her hallucinatory state wielding a knife towards little Rose, who shivers in a bathtub. Though Aisha breaks from this spell before hurting the girl, both are left rattled. The physical warnings are later revealed by Aisha’s love interest's grandmother, Kathleen (Leslie Uggams), who specializes in supernatural spirits. The stakes rise for Aisha to take hold of her bearings within the presence of the delinquent parental figures she works for. But it’s clear that Mami Wata has suppressed patience for long enough, forcing Aisha to finally listen to her ancestral guides once and for all in the gruesome final act. So, what’s the real horror in the movie? Credit: Amazon Studios Finally having collected enough to bring Lamine to America, Aisha sends for her son and his caretaker in Senegal. However, their reunion is thwarted by news that the boy has tragically drowned. Lamine’s drowning is one of the last warnings from Mami Wata to Aisha, the wake-up call for the Nanny protagonist to finally get her head above the water and assess her position within society. After constant antagonizing from her employers with limited pushback from Aisha, she must endure the ultimate tragedy to break this cycle of complacency and rise above her circumstances. Of course, this staggering revelation shatters Aisha. In the end, viewers get a glimpse into her future with a melancholic — but not dispirited — montage that foreshadows remnants of hope for days to come. The weightless ending feels thematically separate from the horror of Lamine's death. The dichotomous events suggest that Lamine’s death is not where the film's horror finally resides. Rather, a deeper and more allegorical theme is to be pulled from the perfectly paced inciting events. What does Nanny's ending mean? Credit: Amazon Studios It’s easy to pass off the asinine duo of Amy and Adam as an annoying obstacle in Aisha’s journey. But their presence is more chasmic than they seem. The couple struggle against one another, their dysfunction bleeding into Aisha's work caring for Rose. Taking into account the separate horrors that the couple commits upon Aisha’s personhood while exploiting her lack of socioeconomic status in the American labor sphere, these two become the movie's modern monsters. So, the villain here is not Mami Wata and Anansi, as it might appear at first glance. Amy and Adam embody the plethora of systemic oppressions immigrant women face in the workforce and social realms as they navigate notions of promised American life. Jusu creatively depicts what mind and body horrors can occur when facing oppression and neglect from violent patriarchy, faux-feminism, and capitalist society. Even with all of the supernatural aspects that make Nanny pop with suspense, Jusu forces us to examine human beings and their oppressive natures as equally horrific as the ghoulish boogeyman figure. Aisha’s intersectionality as a Senegalese immigrant and single Black mother situates her in the hot seat of American societal neglect. Nanny's ending shines a pessimistic — and absolutely necessary — narrative to combat the unrealistic depiction of American excellence conveyed to foreigners. It's apparent that the 'American Dream' only applies to a slim community, not just any 'ole doe-eyed dreamer as most might believe. Sitting in very real and undervalued circumstances, the horrors of exclusivity and exploitation absolutely should be evaluated in this film just as the atrocities committed in slashers are. The buoyant paranoia and suspense of Nanny will have you drowning in sorrow without question, but this ending explainer should make it easier to swim to the shore! Nanny is now showing in cinemas and is streaming on Prime Video globally on Dec. 16. View the full article

  18. Extending well beyond the holiday "Season of Giving," Americans have participated in an astonishing amount of charitable contributions in the last two years. It's a trend that appears to be growing, up almost 7 percent ($51 billion) so far in 2022, and it's partially built off the back of movement organizing for social justice causes. In 2021, individuals (opposed to corporate or foundation giving) donated more than $326 billion to philanthropic causes and made up the industry's largest portion of funding, according to the National Philanthropic Trust. Just as well, individual commitments to issues like racial and reproductive justice coincided with corporate pledges in support of the same causes, with an emphasis on smaller, localized organizing movements — portions of philanthropic funding that have historically gone to larger national nonprofits instead. Organizations, like the minds behind global generosity movement Giving Tuesday, have even reported steady increases in non-monetary giving, in the form of physical items or volunteer time. As more and more people turn to forms of online giving as a way to address growing anxiety, support global movements working for change, and embrace the power of mutual aid, donors are on the hunt for more impactful ways to share their money and solidarity with the causes that matter the most to them. SEE ALSO: What does it mean to decolonize your donations? Charity Navigator is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides free access to data, tools, and resources (including a 4-star scale rating) to help donors make informed decisions about philanthropic giving. Michael Thatcher, president and CEO of Charity Navigator, told Mashable that the organization was founded "to make the best possible information available to as many people as possible. The idea being, whether you have $5 or $5 million, you're still going to find good information on Charity Navigator that can help you make a difference in the world." In November, the two-decade-old nonprofit announced its brand new website, complete with revamped rating systems and unique tools to help "democratize the act of giving," as Thatcher explained. The site now features an expanded ratings system that includes factors like Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) commitments, impact ratings, and community feedback, as well as new ways to donate directly on the site, with other people in value-focused giving circles, and to multiple organizations at once. The site also provides numerous resources for the individual donor who might want to know more about philanthropy and other ways to give back. In many ways, Charity Navigator's new website changes and accompanying tools reflect the culmination of shifts in both activist and philanthropic spaces, trending toward localized, community-voiced giving. "It's not downsizing, it's small-sizing. Going from the mega charities to the small community organizations. This is a movement away from big philanthropy and from the big charities, to a certain extent," Thatcher explained. "In the last two and a half years, [Charity Navigator] started rating significantly smaller charities, and we've also grown how many we rate. We went from rating 9,000 —sort of the big popular ones — to now rating about 200,000. There are over 50,000 charities in our database that are under $200,000 in annual revenue." Alongside a national reexamination of institutional racism and individual bias in all its forms, many advocates have driven a critical reevaluation of the practice of giving, as well. Much of our nation's understanding of charity involves large-scale donors and a philanthropic industry historically intertwined with exploitive capitalism and, fundamentally, white supremacy. Part of that unlearning process is a growing movement for the decolonization of philanthropy, which involves a conscious awareness of how your money, and the way you distribute it, impacts marginalized communities. Thatcher's noticed these shifts, too. "You could say there's a democratization of philanthropy, where individual donors are being empowered with better tools to do better. But they're also raising a spotlight," Thatcher said. "There's a huge equity movement right now, in terms of making it easier to find that small charity and help them gain access to donors anywhere in the country or the world. What we're trying to do with the website is increase the ease of finding exactly that sort of unique organization that five years ago would have been completely invisible unless I happen to be in that neighborhood myself." Popular doesn't mean best. It just means popular. Whether decolonization is your goal (and it's truly a worthy one), or you just have the desire to make sure your donations reach the people who need it most, in the areas that matter to you, sites like the new Charity Navigator can aid in that process. Think of using them as an initial step in your journey of giving. How sites like Charity Navigator workOriginally designed to help high-income private donors in the vein of investing advisor Morningstar, Charity Navigator slowly shifted to a focus on the average individual donor. It works using data provided from a variety of sources to offer in-depth analysis of nonprofits. "We're not Yelp; we are actually doing an evaluation," Thatcher said. Publicly available information in the form of federal tax documents help guide the organization's financial review. Charity Navigator also reviews information submitted directly from the nonprofits themselves, as well as community or constituent feedback. If enough information is available, the site then posts a star rating and a detailed breakdown of why. All of this methodology is clearly outlined on the site. Transparency is key, as they (and Thatcher) say. SEE ALSO: Everything to consider before donating money to a cause A system of evaluating charities and nonprofitsCharity Navigator's ratings are based on four differently weighted "beacons": accountability and finance, which looks at an organization's spending and financial documentations; leadership and adaptability, which assesses an organization's leadership model, structure, and strategic plan; culture and community, which reflects an organization's responsiveness to the needs of its constituents; and impact and results. Impact ratings, specifically, are determined with systems designed by the nonprofit Impact Matters, which was acquired by Charity Navigator in 2020. This system is based on a cost effectiveness or cost per outcome analysis, Thatcher explained, which looks at a nonprofit's specific programs or service areas. Pure data, of course, is not without its bias, and that's why the four-pronged approach is so important to Charity Navigator's goal. "That's where the new rating system focuses, really trying to give you this more holistic picture of who this charity is. What are they doing? How are they doing it? And when possible, what is the impact that they've achieved in the world?" Thatcher said. The organization has given out more than 1,500 nonprofit ratings, but the site boasts more than a million more nonprofit and charity listings that still hold helpful information. The evaluation system is also a lesson to prospective donors, advocates, and activists on a wide scale: Numbers are important, but there's a lot more to charity and activism than simple stats can provide. "This is tricky," Thatcher said, "but popular doesn't mean best. It just means popular." Making informed giving accessible to more peoplePart of Charity Navigator's suite of new resources are additional guides and explanations of common philanthropic questions, concerns, and processes, which seek to empower individual donors when exploring charity both on the site and off. Under Donor Basics, individuals can find things like how to build a personal giving strategy, how to protect your data while donating, and even local volunteer opportunities. It's also filled with information on how to evaluate your donation to a nonprofit when there's not much information out there, or if you're wary of scams. If there's one piece of advice Thatcher can give donors in that regard, he says, it's to always double-check an organizations' Employer Identification Number (EIN) — a federal code that can be used to look up any tax-exempt organization. "When you're talking about barriers to action, I think one of them is that there's often concern about scams and wrongdoing and misuse," Thatcher explained. "But when you look at the data… it's a tiny, tiny portion of the nonprofit sector. You have varying degrees of efficiency and effectiveness in the sector, but in general, all our data is showing the fact that nonprofits are doing their best. What's often the case is that the scams are being conducted by people other than nonprofits. They're just crooks, lookalikes. And that's where the EIN number comes in." Find charities that align with your valuesAs the industry moves toward even greater transparency, Thatcher explained that there's a simultaneous change in how people find places and people to give to. "Giving is now becoming very values-based. As I like to think about it, causes grab you by the heart and say, 'Go do something about this.' Then you go out and find a charity that's actually addressing it." Value-driven investing has already been on a decade-long rise in the form of environmentally and socially-responsible Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) funds, which let individuals invest their money in funds that actively uphold their own values, like anti-gun manufacturing. And, obviously, charitable giving has always been driven by the personal beliefs of donors themselves, for better or for worse. But there is a new emphasis on aligning your money with organizations that share both your values and the means for achieving those — and doing so outside of the most "mainstream" nonprofit organizations. Think before you give, but don't stop. You actually have to make the move, make the gift, go and volunteer — do something, because we really need people to keep giving. The Charity Navigator site now provides topic-based lists, such as LGBTQ support, gun violence prevention, and voting rights, as well as trending topic or crisis-focused lists, similar to the directories and hubs created by the crowdfunding site GoFundMe. If you'd rather start with what's popular and then narrow down by values, other lists include the Most Followed, Most Viewed, and Household Name Charities. "Think of this as our first attempt at an issues fund," Thatcher said. "And the way we've set up the lists is you can give to an individual organization within that list, or you can give to the entire list." Give to multiple organizations at once Recently, nationwide social justice movements have re-popularized this mode of multifaceted giving, usually in the form of single donation portals that split funds among several organizations working for the same cause. Supporters have probably seen donation opportunities like this on progressive fundraising sites like ActBlue. Charity Navigator lets you do a similar method of donation through its Giving Basket, a digital cart that lets you add several donations in varying amounts to different organizations, all in a single transaction. It's like online shopping, but with charitable donations. The site also keeps a record of your donations and lets you set up recurring payments through the Charity Navigator platform. "When you look at a complex issue, like the environment, there's a bunch of different angles to work from," Thatcher said. "It is a collective effort to address some of these issues, and that's where personal preference comes in." Join a community-driven giving effortBeing an individual donor doesn't have to mean giving back in isolation. In fact, group-driven donating might be a more worthwhile option for some donors, in the form of Giving Circles. Giving Circles connect individual donors together to make single, communal monthly donations to a specific cause or group of nonprofits selected by the circle members. In order to support this form of giving, Charity Navigator has partnered with Grapevine, a platform designed to facilitate community organized donations, and Philanthropy Together, a global philanthropy initiative attempting to advance the industry move toward giving circles. The Giving Circles hub of the Charity Navigator site allows people to search for collective giving opportunities, using filters like location, area of interest, and giving amount. It can also introduce donors to topics they might never have heard of, like the Decolonizing Wealth and Liberated Capital movement, or nonprofits that weren't yet on their radar, like those in the Latino Community Fund's network. Charity Navigator's updates are just one part of a growing movement to revolutionize the way people conceptualize philanthropy and how individuals participate in communal care. But at their core, these practices exist beyond any technical or digital tools. They're built into our social and emotional history. "Listen to your heart, use your head, and then go out and make a difference," Thatcher said. "Think before you give, but don't stop. You actually have to make the move, make the gift, go and volunteer — do something, because we really need people to keep giving. That's one of the beautiful things about being human: We care for each other." View the full article
  19. There's something exhilarating about snuggling up with the raggedy emotional support blanket you've been lugging around since middle school to watch two women run amok in their fantasy-like town. The multi-award-winning 2000s TV series Gilmore Girls might seem an odd pick for a guilty pleasure. But it's not the dynamic plot, compelling love stories, or the nearly 80-page episode scripts that have solidified its place in my heart. I'm in love with the series as a perfectly unhurried depiction of Elysian life. Filler episodes have long been the bane of many a television binge-watchers' existence, taking time and space away from the show's main plot and stultifying progress for longer story arcs. As a result, many shows have done away with filler episodes in favor of giving fans in a hurry their wish: the 8 to 10 episode season. This evil episodic style has taken over the industry and left zero space for filler. (RIP to default 22-episode seasons.) Filler episodes' bad rep is mainly due to watchers' belief that if the story has nothing to do with the main conflict, then what's the point? Gilmore Girls combats this notion with their filler episodes, utilizing their slow pace to deeply establish characters with dynamism, backstory, emotions, motives, and distinct attitudes far beyond overused tropes like “the dumb blonde” or the intentionally unlikeable no-good-doers. SEE ALSO: 'Gilmore Girls' will forever be a master class in pop culture Each episode of the situational dramedy is an escape from my everyday routine; a journey to a place where everyone is unrealistically cheery and frivolous spending is never questioned. The show was always a lighthearted mother-daughter drama that had just enough angst to get us through the week. In 2022, we also need to recognize that Gilmore Girls is actually a slow-paced utopian universe set in a walkable city filled with slow burns, undemanding enemies-to-lovers tropes, too many brooding Byronic heroes to count, and, of course, the central duo of lovable cottage-core wannabes, Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, to tie the town together. For me, the best bits are small moments, like when Lorelai sends Rory to pick up Sixteen Candles while she orders Chinese takeout for dinner — because the only edible things that take up her cabinets are Pop-Tarts and donut holes. When your life feels like a perpetual rush, Gilmore Girls is a perfect reminder of the beauty in leisure. If you’re binge-watching the show to speed into the drama and climatic elements, you’re watching it all wrong. The plot points or that final kiss you've been waiting on forever wouldn't be nearly as sweet with rushed development or a sloppily constructed romance! "When your life feels like a perpetual rush, Gilmore Girls is a perfect reminder of the beauty in leisure." The beauty in Gilmore Girls filler episodes is that while they may seem like 40-minutes-worth of just their famous "La-la" score, all that buildup toward the more memorable plot points makes these underrated journeys wildly exciting. Instead of simply watching characters make their decision and incite action, we learn why they commit to certain causes, giving us background for when they ultimately decide to reject the marriage proposal from the hot guy you were rooting for or choose the unlikely university acceptance letter over their dream school. In Season 1 filler episode 12, "Double Date," not much of the main plot is established beyond the budding romance between Lorelai's best friend, Sookie, and her hotel's produce guy, Jackson. Instead, viewers get a comical introduction to Lorelai's unlucky dating streak as she goes on a blind double date with lovebirds Sookie and Jackson — and an ornery man who’d rather be anywhere but. After the date, Lorelai and diner owner (and eventual love interest) Luke Danes exchange quips and cute glances. This moment serves as a small appetizer to feed into one of the greatest slow-burn romances of TV. The episode provides an additional glimpse into the famous friendship between Rory and her equal, Lane. As their own double-date-turned-catastrophe unfolds, the two lie to their moms about their whereabouts, since Lane’s mom forbids her from dating. Both Rory and Lorelai go above and beyond for their best friends in the episode, solidifying the duo as the ultimate "girl’s girl" pair for the rest of the series. Even when the teenage girls' lies come to the surface, Rory and Lorelai are quick to re-establish their unique and almost fantasy-like mother-daughter dynamic that reigns supreme throughout the show’s lifespan. (We also get pretty cool banter about Claudine Longet, the inspo behind “Claudine” by the Rolling Stones.) My unhealthy attachment to Gilmore Girls is tied to our current network season order model. We used to have arcs and dynamic characters who work to win you over! You might be asking, “But why would anyone prefer to watch meaningless filler episodes?" You may not realize how much we as viewers have lost more than we've gained with the death of episodes where "nothing much happens." If not for the many filler episodes that set up the harrowing season finales, slow-burn romances would have no place for nurturing within the series, and you can forget the frequent deep-cut film and music references, from The Shawshank Redemption to Yoko Ono, which provide those ever-so-lovely "Hey! You know that, too?" moments. There aren't many shows that can rip your heart out in gut-wrenching season finale twists and then seamlessly cut to the image of the town's troubadour playing a rendition of "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go." Gilmore Girls just has a je ne sais quoi that simply can't be replicated in a 10-episode-series era, when the action leaves the room as soon as it enters. From Carole King's "Where You Lead I Will Follow" Gilmore Girls theme song to the shining cast that can brighten any gloomy day Stars Hollow could offer, the utopia that is the 2000s sitcom will remain my comfort until cutsie filler episodes make a hard comeback!
