  3. P2P Sites That Use Spyware-Good guy or bad guy?

    Josh Avedisian-Fileportal News

You may not think spyware is all that bad and that its worth the tradeoff you get from free filesharing. However, it could be very dangerous to your computer.

When you go to a P2P site, the host does not tell you whether or not the

spyware/adware is bundled up with the software. Soonafter, when you download the application, your system is suddenly filled with unwanted software and spyware. I'm sure you've heard many horror stories from people that use Kazaa and similar P2Ps of having to reformat their harddrive to fix the mess that the program created.

On the other hand, you should understand that the developers of P2P software make nothing from their applications. Therefore, some p2p developers will add spyware to their filesharing programs to cover there costs and more. That's reasonable. However, some P2P sites often lie to you and say they have no spyware or unwanted software.

So how can you tell if a p2p program contains spyware and unwanted programs? When you are about to install the application program, read the tiny words on the bottom: "To Keep This program running, it contains third party software." If this is the case with the program you are downloading, cancel it immeidately and find another P2P program. In addition, are programs available such as "Adaware" which can delete the spyware and software.

We highly recommend you do a bit of research before you adopt any P2P program. Check around various P2P forums such as this one, or Zeropaid, and ask questions. Fileportal.net has compiled list of popular P2P programs that contain spyware and bundled programs. We hope this will help you in making educated choices before adopting your P2P filesharing program. Here is a short rundown:

With the recent rash of pay to get music programs coming out in the year 2003 Supportp2p wanted to know if any of them were succeeding or just not selling well. So we did a little research and this is what we found. I opened my Napster 2.0 Client at 8:00 PM and did a search for pop music (which we are guessing is the most popular music on Napster) We got over 200 users from the search results, which is not that bad sense we did it when Napster 2.0 was in beta. We got 40 results. So Napster is moving foward user wise.

We did a search to see how deep Napster's collection of Music is. First we searched a popular artist in Britney spears and we found that it had all her albums, To bad they were only selling her new album "In the Zone" for $9.95, the other albums you had to buy all the songs which would cost close to $15.00! So we did a search on a artist that is not as popular as Britney called 12 stones and this is what we got was artist we didn't want. So we see that Napster's library does not contain many rare files. So we decided to do one more search and search for a semi-popular band you may of heard of named "SlipKnot" and all we got was songs from their album "Iowa". The Bad part about this is that you couldnt buy the Cd itself for 9.95. So if you wanted the full album you would have to pay close to $15.00.

Ok so Napster doesn't contain much music. Maybe they have a good help service if you find yourself in some trouble. We did a recent test and said that we bought the wrong album and that Napster did not tell us which album it was. They were pretty quick on there reponse (2 days). They were very nice about it and all they requested was that we send them the recent purchases list. We did and they refunded our money. So we give them a "A+" on there service. But does service matter if you have no songs to choose from to download? Thats your call.

Ok Napster has all the cool features and cool specs to attract people's attention but as you see in our test Napster 2.0 does not stack up to what you can get from P2P and with the recent ruling that stated its unconstitutional to sue p2p users for file trading. So really what is Napster and other pay sites for?
