I never wouldda thuk it possible. Shows ya what I know. Not only is it possible, it's pretty damned great! Finnish band Nightwish combines heavy metal with elements of classical opera into an interesting musical experience. Formed around a campfire in 1996, Nightwish began as just a couple friends with an acoustic guitar and an incredibly talented classically trained vocalist (Tarja Turunen). Their debut album, "Angels Fell First" was released in 1997, and quickly made its way to number 31 on the Finnish charts. Their second album, "Oceanborn" was released in 1998 and climbed to number five, and the single "Sacrement of Wilderness" held the number one spot on the singles charts for weeks. Their third album, "Wishmaster" was released in 2000 and went straight to number one on the charts. Nightwish have released two additional albums: "Over the Hills and Far Away" in 2001 and "Century Child" in 2003. They have also released two DVD's and are currently working on their sixth album. If you've never heard this band before and are looking for something different (heavy metal music with female opera-style vocals), give this band a listen. You can download some of their songs from their website at http://www.nightwish.com/english/mp3.html. Hailing from Norway, Pagan's Mind was formed during the summer of 2000. Featuring Jørn Lofstad and Thorstein Eugen Aaby on guitar, Ronny Tegner on keyboards, Steinar Krokmo on bass, Nils Rue on vocals, and Stian Kristoffersen on drums, Pagans Mind has a very promising future. Their debut album "Infinity Divine" grabs you from the opening track and refuses to let go. The music has something for everyone from crushing rhythms to highly complex and variable melodies. Bright Eyes magazine says, "the track 'Caught i a dream' sounds like a mix between old Metallica, Iced Earth and Dream Theater and you can easily compare the rest of the album with these bands." Although personally, I consider "Infinity Divine" their best work, many fans consider thier follow-up CD, "Celestial Entrance", released in 2002, to be an even more magnificent work. Says, ProgPower Magazine, "The band has practically improved on every level since the debut. This is a very varied and dynamic album, constantly challenging the listener. Technically there are lots of details to discover with each spin of this album. However, it is the melodies that are in focus here. The band has clearly emphasized on writing strong melody-lines and has fully succeeded at that. This is songwriting on a grand scale. Although full of intricate themes, the melodies are accessible and addictive. Just listen to the opener ‘Through Osiris Eyes’ which is a magnificent example of tech combined with melody. Furthermore ‘Entrance Stargate’, ‘Dimension of Fire’ and the epic 10 minute track ‘Prophecy of the Pleiades’, with more than a hint of Dream Theater, are all a few examples of many killer tracks to be found. And to top it all the production by Fredrik Nordstrøm (Hammerfall, Synergy etc) is rich, powerful, crystal clear and simply perfect for these songs." Lost Classics

Ah, the good ole' days. Remember Don Kirschner's Rock Concert and the Midnight Special? For that matter, remember when they used to have commercials on TV advertising new albums from real bands and then you could count on hearing the whole album on the radio? But yeah, Kooperman is right...those days are probably long gone. Bummer. God, I feel old. Tic3
  4. > Really? None at all? Oh, man! There's a ton of really great metal out there if you look hard enough (and I'm not talking about Nu). In addition to the two bands I've mentioned in other posts (Angel Dust and Tad Morose), there are bands like Brainstorm, Steel Prophet, At Vance, Iced Earth, Jag Panzer, Primal Fear, Kamelot, Pagan's Mind, and many many others. Granted, not every song or CD these bands release is top noch, but the vast majority of the material is great. I can recommend (and will be recommending in various posts) lots of quality metal. Tic3
  5. " Don't forget sisters Janet & Michael Jackson" :lmao:
  6. Talent often runs in the family. Siblings occasionally form bands together or form separate bands, sometimes successfully. Other times not so successfully. Take brothers Rudolph and Michael Schenker. Originally playing together in the band The Scorpions, Michael soon left to form his own band, U.F.O. Both bands were (and still are) highly successful. Or consider Ron West of the rock group Missouri and his brother Gary of the group Shooting Star. Missouri is probably best known for their hit song "Movin' On" released back in 1977. It is still played on classic rock stations today. Shooting Star had a number of outstanding songs back in the mid-70's including "Last Chance", "Tonight", and "Bring it On". And of course there is Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. Once considered (and still considered by many) to be the hardest rocking ladies in the music biz, the Wilson sisters are known for such hits as Barracuda, Crazy On You, Magic Man, Straight On, and many others. How many musical siblings do you know of? Tic3

    Lost Classics

Ever notice how all the so-called classic rock stations seem to play the same 25-30 songs? What are some of your favorite "lost classics" that you never hear on the radio? The one-hit wonders. The pearls among swine. Songs that you think should be heard by every lover of great classic rock. Here's a few of my favorites: Diesel - Sausalito Summer Night Doucette - Mama Let Him Play Flame - Beg Me Jo Jo Gunne - Run Run Run Joe Vitale - Lady On The Rock Mama's Pride - Blue Mist.mp3 String Driven Thing - Circus Tarney Spencer Band - No Time To Lose Angel - Tower Bloodrock - D.O.A. Chilliwack - Fly At Night Focus - Hocus Pocus Foreigner - Starrider Michael Stanley Band - Rosewood Bitters Moxy - Sail On Sail Away Poco - A Good Feelin To Know Next? Tic3
  8. Over the last decade, Swedish power metallists Tad Morose have matured into one of the best that Europe has to offer. With a discography that includes seven CD's, Tad Morose have shown that they are able to perservere despite several lineup changes. 2002's Matters of the Dark was certainly a highlight of the band's musical history. With outstanding song-writing, crushing guitars, and stellar vocals, Matters of the Dark has remained in my rotation since it's release. The band's upcoming release "Modus Vivendi" equals or surpasses Matters of the Dark and shows the band's continuing improvement. As good as Matters of the Dark is, Modus Vivendi may be just that much better. The songs have a much more polished and professional sound, and the increased use of vocal harmonies fits the music like a glove. If you're a fan of traditional power metal, Matters of the Dark and Modus Vivendi are a must for your collection. You can check out a few of their songs at the Century Media band site http://www.centurymedia.com/bands/tadmorose.htm or you can find their music in the usual places ;) As before, if you give them a listen, post back and let us know what you think. 9. Well, ok then! Howdy all. I recognize a few names from another forum. Ok, I followed a posting from the other forum over to here. Thanks for the welcome, all. I'm Tic3. And have been since about 1993. Oh, God! I've been online for 11 years. Anyway, I love music. Classic rock and especially heavy metal. I have tons of recommendations (including some rare classic rock and classic and recent heavy metal) and hope to share some of them with everyone, and will also look to check out some of your recommendations. See my first recommendation for Angel Dust in the Heavy Metal foum. If you check them out, let me know what you think! Tic3

    Recommendation

Hailing from Germany, Angel Dust boasts six album releases since 1986. The albums "Bleed" and "Enlighten the Darkness" are highly recommended for any fan of powerful, crushing heavy metal. The band's latest release, "Of Human Bondage" isn't quite up to the standards set by the two previous releases (above), and the band's future is currently uncertain. While the bands problems are being sorted out, lead vocalist Dirk Thurisch has taken up the guitar and released what is in itself a very stron release. The band is called Mercury Tide, and the album is titled "Why". If you are not familiar with Angel Dust, I strongly recommend the following songs: Bleed Artifacts of the Black Rain Surrender Let Me Live The One You Are Still I'm Bleeding And from Mercury Tide: Lost and Torn Set Me Free You can visit each respective band's websites to check out a (very) few samples: angel-dust.de and mercury-tide.com Feel free to message me at on Windows Messenger as Tic3 (although I'm rarely on) or email me at Tic3 at mailsnare dot net. Later! Tic3
