UK Tracks Of The Week: Skinz, Dru Blu, Fekky, Newham Generals, Marger

Let’s not beat around the bush: British rap and grime music had a turbulent run in 2013. But despite the ups and the downs, the signings and the flops, the lyricism has generally been of a high quality – which is all I've ever tried to highlight in this column. Looking back, though, I might've made it seem as though the UK scene is as booming as the one in NYC, when in fact it's not. Far from, actually.

Yes, the lyrical talent may be impressive – especially with newcomers like London's Little Torment and Sheffield's Skinz (pictured above) rising up the ranks – but where were the memorable mixtapes? Where were the well-thought-out albums? Where were the creative visuals? In 2014, there needs to be more than just fire freestyles and club bangers, and from speaking with other tastemakers I know I'm not alone in thinking this.

For the final UK Tracks Of The Week column of the year, I'm just gonna to let the music do the talking. Here's to the UK rap and grime scenes proving me wrong in 2014!
