SAN JOSE, Calif. (Reuters) -Apple Computer Inc. rolled out on Tuesday a new iPod that allows users to view and share photos, a dramatic expansion that takes the popular digital music player into the multimedia realm, while spurring its rivalry withMicrosoft Corp. and others.

Apple (AAPL.O) also has hooked up with Irish rock band U2 to announce the iPod U2 Special Edition, a black model of its popular digital music player that holds up to 5,000 songs.

The new iPod Photo, which had been widely anticipated, is a multimedia device with a color screen and comes with 40 gigabytes or 60 gigabytes of storage -- two to three times more than the storage available on its most used music player.

The NY Times just publishes a review. Here's an excerpt and the link to the article:

The iPod Photo, as it's called, looks and feels exactly like the existing iPod (it's one millimeter thicker). There's the famous white click wheel, there's the shiny chrome back panel, there are your fingerprints on it. But its two-inch screen is now in bright, crisp color.

The color screen is infinitely superior to the old black-and-white one, thanks in part to its new, sharper typeface. It makes a world of difference to built-in iPod programs like the calendar and the arcade games. It also shows the album's cover artwork when a song is playing.

But the real purpose of this screen is, of course, to display your digital pictures, which the iPod Photo automatically copies from your Mac or PC.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
