What The New 'Star Wars' Movies Need: Kyp Durron

Looks like "Star Wars VII" is finally starting to pick up some steam. Last week, two more actors were revealed to be in the running for key roles in the upcoming "Star Wars" trilogy: Ksenia Solo and Liam McIntyre. Allegedly, Solo is up for the role of Han and Leia's daughter while McIntyre is in talks to play an as-of-yet unnamed Jedi.

This, of course, means that Ksenia Solo and Rachel Hurd-Wood may or may not be directly competing for the role of Leia's daughter, who has been said to potentially be the main protagonist of the film. While this is all well and good, we can't help but wonder what mysterious Jedi McIntyre will be portraying. After all, there are several key Jedi in the Star Wars Expanded Universe ripe for the picking. Take Kyp Durron for example, a Jedi who was at one point possessed by the spirit of a deceased Sith Lord.



[b]Who?[/b]
Hailing from the planet Deyer, Kyp Durron learns to hate the Galactic Empire at an early age after his parents are incarcerated by Imperial Forces and his brother is unwillingly drafted into service. Kyp, being eight years old at the time, is taken to the Kessel prison complex where he is forced to work day-in and day-out in the spice mines. It isn't until Han Solo rescues him and takes him to Luke Skywalker's Jedi Praxeum that Kyp begins to unlock his natural Force sensitivity.

Kyp's anger and resentment towards the Empire made him a prime target for the spirit of the long-deceased Sith Lord Exar Kun. Being possessed by Kun's Force ghost, Kyp steals a powerful weapon called the Sun Crusher and goes on an Imperial killing spree. Eventually, Han Solo is able to talk him down while Luke and his Jedi compatriots on Yavin 4 are able to exorcize the evil spirit from Kyp's body.

[b]Why?[/b]
Kyp is a troubled soul with a backstory about as interesting as it is tragic. Not only does he basically grow up in a prison complex, but he's also forced to watch the older brother that he loves and respects fight alongside the nefarious militants that imprisoned his family in the first place. Also, there's the fact that he's the only Jedi to ever be fully possessed by the spirit of a deceased Sith Lord and still go on to become a member of the New Jedi Order.

[b]How?[/b]
Needless to say, Kyp's story is one that requires a great deal of screen time. Perhaps, if he were to appear as an eight year old child in "Star Wars VII" that has been imprisoned by Stormtroopers, he could then be seen in "Star Wars VIII" as he's rescued by Han Solo and taken in by Luke Skywalker. Then, in "Star Wars IX," we could see Kyp being possessed by Exar Kun which would in turn make him the main antagonist of that film. It's a long shot, but totally necessary if we're expected to truly feel for this tragic character.
