After a legendary career that shaped the music scene and inspired rebellious teens everywhere, one Beastie Boy has found a new way to contribute to pop culture—through fashion. Mike D created a 10-minute soundtrack for the fashion label Kenzo to use during their Men’s Spring/Summer 2014 Show.

The legendary Beastie was introduced to the creative directors for the Paris-based fashion label through a mutual friend, Spike Jonze. Kenzo’s Humberto Leon and Carol Lim asked Mike D to create a track “inspired by the Californian scene.” Mike wanted to put a new spin on the music Leon was inspired by.

“I definitely shared Humberto’s passion for American Punk and that raw energy, and I think that informs the collection and the soundtrack I did,” Mike said in an interview posted on Kenzo’s blog.

The resulting soundtrack is called “Humberto Vs. The New Reactionaries (Christine and the Queens Remixx).” The punk/trap-inspired piece has a raw quality that Mike says shares the same “hot beats and energy” as the fashion label.

And while the catwalks of Paris and the streets of Brooklyn may seem worlds apart, Mike says there’s a common spirit that links the fashion industry and his music together. “I’ve always been more captivated by that kid that clearly has an individual solo soundtrack,” Mike D said. “That dresses, walks, moves to his or her own frequency, often for years before anyone else catches on.”

MTV premiered “Beastieography,” a biography of the Beastie Boys, 15 years ago on July 11.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
