Jay-Z may not be able to actually dunk a basketball, but his signing of Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant, his first NBA player, to his Roc Nation Sports agency was a posterizing slam dunk on the whole sports agent world.

The much-talked about signing became official Monday (June 24) as Hov’s now most marketable professional athlete took to Instagram to announce to the world that he was the newest addition to the Roc La Familia.

"Grateful for this opportunity with Roc Nation Sports," Durant wrote above a picture of him looking on as Jay signed contracts. "It's go time." On the same picture, along with the hashtags #NewRules and #RocNation, there was also a caption from the Magna Carta Holy Grail MC himself.

"He has a 90.5 free throw shooting rate, the youngest player in NBA history to join the 50-40-90 club, a giving individual and a legend in the making. What more can I say?" said Jay. Although she was nowhere near the historic signing, Roc Nation chanteuse Rihanna made sure she took time out to congratulate Durant on his latest power move by reposting Durant’s picture on IG to the tune of over 100,000 likes.

“This is #ROCNation Pledge your allegiance!! Welcome bro @easymoneysniper #itsdaROCindismuphucka,” Rih Rih wrote.

Durant joins the WNBA’s Skylar Diggins, the NFL’s Geno Smith and the MLB’s Robinson Cano on the Roc Nation roster. Although Jay still hasn’t officially sold his minority stake in the Brooklyn Nets, which bars him from representing any NBA player in contract negotiations, he will still be able to do marketing deals for the four-time NBA scoring champ. Securing marquee endorsements for Durant will be a tall order for Jay, considering that he already has lucrative deals with Panini America, 2k Sports, BBVA Compass, Sprint, Gatorade, Skullcandy headphones and Nike.

That being said, it’ll just be another way Jay proves that he has the power to “make new rules” for the game.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
