The NHL pulled the plug on hockey Wednesday, with an emotional Gary Bettman painting a bleak picture of a Grand Canyon-sized divide between owners and the Players' Association.

The commissioner depicted a league essentially on economic life support, a league that lost $224 million US last season - a dismal bottom line that actually represented an improvement over the previous year. The NHL has lost $1.8 billion over the 10 years of the existing collective bargaining agreement, he said.

My opinion is that the players need to understand that they are entertainers. As such they are only worth what people are willing to pay them. In order to pay them people have to attend games, and that is impossible except for a select few, as the prices are too high. Hence the league is going in the hole big time. Now i dont blame just the players, as the owners caused this situation by overpaying players, and digging this hole. The players can bitch all they want, but the hard line is that most teams are not showing a profit, and if the money loosers are shut down, there will be a lot of long faces among the players. I say lock it the hell down. and if they wont listen to reason, start over again with a salery cap.

Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
