While it seems like every week there’s an influx of new music to contend with, this week has seen the arrival of new music from some it’s biggest names. Beyonce dropped her all-conquering, semi-“ode” to Houston’s screwed scene, “Bow Down/I Been On” on Sunday. The following day Jay-Z joined our Hottest MC, Kendrick Lamar, on the remix of “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe.” And in case you hadn’t noticed, Justin Timberlake released his third studio album, The 20/20 Experience on Tuesday. Then, on Wednesday Jeremih and Shlohmo released their collaboration “Bo Peep (Do U Right)."

Yes, that’s “Birthday Sex” Jeremih. Yes, you probably have never heard of Shlohmo. And yes, neither Jeremih nor Shlohmo is in the same league as those artists, but this song is just as good as any released this week.

Last October the LA-based Shlohmo remixed Jeremih’s syrupy and very forward “F--- U All The Time” of off the Chicago singer’s under-appreciated Late Night mixtape. Adidas wisely decided to pair the two for their “Songs From Scratch” series, which has previously produced tracks from Lunice and Angel Haze as well as AraabMuzik and Danny Brown. Jeremih’s fleshy falsetto flows effortless through Shlohmo’s rigid drums and synths on “Bo Peep,” as the two create possibly the most sensual ode to the absent minded shepherd ever.

Jeremih has been in the shadow of many of R&B’s brighter young talents such Trey Songz, Miguel and Frank Ocean, but he has lasted past the allotted 15-minutes that many guessed following his first hit - the aforementioned “Birthday Sex.” If “Bo Peep” is any indication, he may have more time – hopefully enough for more studio time with Shlohmo.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
