Yesterday sure was a crazy day, wasn't it, folks? First, we get to (maybe) news that Zack Snyder, the often maligned director of "Watchmen" and "Man of Steel," would direct a stand-alone "Star Wars" movie, based loosely on Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai." Awesome, right? You're moving too quickly.

Not so fast, you nerf herder. Snyder's reps were quick to reply to Vulture's original report, claiming that the director is "not involved in any way with the new 'Star Wars.'" This reaction is more or less just a reflex for Hollywood publicists, who have no qualms about lying in order to protect an in-the-works deal.

So what's really going on? Vulture initially broke the news on Michael Arndt writing a treatment for the new "Star Wars" trilogy, so they have set a precedent for having some inside line on the franchise. Plus, we won't hear anything from Snyder's camp until the ink is dry. (If the development is even real.)

So what to do until we know for sure? We have some suggestions.

Rewatch "Seven Samurai"
You've seen it, right? So you know it's amazing, and there's no need for us to tell you that, right? We'll turn our backs for three hours, and when we turn around, let's talk about "Seven Samurai." Because you've definitely already seen it. (It's available on Hulu Plus, just in case... noob.)

Check of "The Bounty Hunters" Episode of "Clone Wars"
It turns out that the whole "Seven Samurai"-retold-as-"Star Wars" thing isn't an entirely new concept. The Cartoon Network series told a similar story during its second season. You can rent it now on Amazon.

Read "Eight Against A World"
It turns out that the whole "Seven Samurai"-retold-as-"Star Wars" thing wasn't even new when "Clone Wars" did it. As Badass Digest points out, "Eight Against A World" tells a similar story with Han, Chewie, and a big green bunny.

Watch "Hidden Fortress"
"Oh, a space opera inspired by an Akira Kurosawa movie? How novel!" Not quite. When Lucas was formulating his plan for the very first "Star Wars" movie, he looked to this Kurosawa movie as a source of inspiration. You can check it out here.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
