Losing a loved one is tough for anybody, but to lose your grandmother on Thanksgiving is particularly hard. On Thursday night, while most of us were seated with our families at the dinner table, Drake was mourning the death of his grandmother. “Rest in peace to my grandmother Evelyn Sher. What a day to go...thankful to have had the times we did,” he wrote on Twitter last night.

The rap superstar shared a deep bond with his mother’s mom, who spent her last days in a nursing home. Drizzy rhymed about his bubbe on numerous occasions and even featured her on last year’s hit album Take Care. â€œI heard they just moved my grandmother to a nursing home/ And I be actin’ like I don’t know how to work a phone,” he rapped with guilt on “The Resistance,” an album cut from his official 2010 debut Thank Me Later.

On “The Winner,” an unreleased gem that would’ve been a fitting single had Drake won either of the two Grammy awards he was nominated for in 2010, he again name-dropped the matriarch of his fam. â€œYeah, and in the name of Evelyn Sher/ I’ll forever forgive anybody that never was there/ For me, no other woman could ever compare/ My angel I hope heaven’s prepared for whenever you there,” he spit as if he was giving his acceptance speech.

More recently the emotionally-driven rap wiz featured Sher on “Look What You’ve Done,” the most revealing track on his sophomore offering. After toasting to his mother in the first verse and then his uncle in the second 16, Drake turns the mic over to Sher who talks to her grandson from her nursing home.“All I can say Aubrey is, I remember the good times we had together and the times I used to look after you and I still have wonderful feelings about that,” she said over the somber piano beat. “So God bless you, and I hope I’ll see you.”

RapFix sends our condolences to Drake and his family. Rest in peace Evelyn Sher.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
