Breakups are never easy. That's why we're hoping that Ryan Gosling leaving Warner Bros' adaptation of "Logan's Run" doesn't mean the end of his collaborations with director Nicolas Winding Refn.

Variety's Justin Kroll tweeted out yesterday that the star had severed ties to the sci-fi film.

"Rough news for those LOGAN'S RUN fans, I can confirm Ryan Gosling is no longer attached to the project," he wrote.

"Logan's Run" was set to be the third collaboration for Gosling and Refn, who had previously worked on "Drive" and the yet-to-be-released "Only God Forgives." For a while, the two were looking like best buds, set on making visual, violent films together forever, but that sadly seems like it's not the case.

While Kroll's tweet didn't precede a full article on the news, The Playlist had a number of well-reasoned theories for why Gosling walked away. As this would be a rather high-profile adaptation for Warner Bros., Gosling may not be the bankable star all the girls on tumblr assume he is. He has yet to lead a tentpole film and hasn't proven himself as a big box office draw.

Gosling's directorial debut, "How to Catch a Monster," may be the most realistic explanation. Since he is just beginning to get that production off the ground, Gosling will be finding himself very busy for the next year or so.

As disappointing as the "Logan's Run" news may be for "Drive" fans, there is still "Only God Forgives" to look forward to. That film should pop up sometime next year, perhaps during the spring film festivals.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
