David Fincher is getting some serious love from the video game community following the launch of his epic "Halo 4" trailer, "Scanned," which debuted last night on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon."

Longtime fans of the "Halo" franchise will have a lot more to chew on here than newcomers. This trailer details the backstory of Master Chief, whose actual name is John. We see everything from his childhood on Eridanus II to him being kidnapped in the middle of the night and being swapped with a cheap clone to the augmentation surgery that results in him having superhuman strength and speed. The trailer then ends with Chief facing off against the new, "ancient" enemies, known as the Prometheans, that fans will meet in "Halo 4."

It's interesting that 343 Industries decided to tease "Halo 4" with the backstory of its iconic main character, since it hasn't been touched on in any previous games. This isn't the first time the tie-in marketing for "Halo 4" is looking back, as the "Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn" live action webseries is examining the backstory of another character from the game, Thomas Lasky.

Fincher either is a big "Halo" geek or had some serious help for this trailer, considering it's one of the most in-depth looks at the series' mythology that we've seen recreated by Microsoft. It looks great, too, though we can't help but have a soft spot for the gorgeous "Halo 3" and "Halo 3: ODST" commercials that "Snow White and the Huntsman" director Rupert Sanders created.

"Halo 4" hits store shelves on November 6.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
