Kanye West was nowhere to be seen at the 2012 BET Hip Hop Awards which aired on Tuesday night (October 9), but he still racked up six trophies over the course of the night.

'Ye was nominated 17 times, and while the show — which aired Tuesday (October 9) but was pre-taped September 29 — didn't air all the categories, BET listed the winners on its website. Kanye snagged Producer of the Year, the Made You Look Award (Best Hip Hop Style) and the Perfect Combo Award for "Mercy," along with his G.O.O.D. Music crew. The multiplatinum hitmaker took home another three awards for his work with Jay-Z as part of the Throne, bringing his total to six.

2 Chainz had himself a hell of a night as well, taking home three trophies, including the People's Champ Award and Rookie of the Year, and performing as well. Rick Ross beat out heavy-hitter Jay-Z for MVP of the Year, but Hov's business moves earned him the Hustler of the Year win.

Kendrick Lamar pulled the biggest upset of the night, when the rookie rapper bested veterans Nas, Jay-Z and Kanye West for Lyricist of the Year, and it was Drake and Lil Wayne who earned the top spot in the Video of the Year category for their "HYFR" clip. All in all it was a memorable night, which had comedian Mike Epps hosting and Wiz Khalifa opening alongside Young Jeezy and Juicy J in the Atlanta Civic Center. T.I. tore through his "Track Back Jumpin' " single, and Meek Mill and Kirko Bangz rocked their new collaboration "Young and Gettin' It." 2 Chainz, Rick Ross and Kendrick Lamar also performed, while Snoop Dogg, Mac Miller and DMX took part in the awards show's fan-favorite cyphers.

The night ended beautifully with an all-star performance from A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe, Missy Elliott and 50 Cent in honor of fallen music mogul Chris Lighty.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
