The Weeknd Won't Let Record Deal Change His Music

In anticipation of his major label debut, Trilogy, coming this November, the Weeknd promises fans that his crossover into the mainstream game will not compromise his artistry. In an open letter, the Canadian singer-songwriter vowed: “You will continue to get what you fell in love with, and I will continue to give you what you ask for.”

The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, first claimed his spot in the underground scene with House of Balloons in March 2011. Now he feels “stuck” between worlds as his decision to sign on with Universal Republic gains him more recognition. This “predicament” is what he expresses in the new video for “Rolling Stone” from his Thursday mixtape, in which he sings, “I think I’ll be different/I hope I’m not different.” The R&B crooner explains that the girl holding on to him in the video symbolizes his fans and the camera lights represent his transition from underground to mainstream.

But despite his conflicted state, the singer believes in the new direction of his career. “Even though I don’t want to, it is a step I feel I must take to evolve as an artist.” He signs off the letter with gratitude and assures fans: “I will not disappoint.”
