It turns out that Rupert Wyatt might not be returning for the "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" sequel. More than a year after we first heard about "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," word has it that Wyatt has decided that he's going to sit out the upcoming movie.

Deadline was the first to report the news, saying that Wyatt "didn't feel comfortable" meeting "Dawn's" May 2014 release date. The outlet wasn't able to get confirmation that Wyatt is out for good, but things don't sound good for the movie right now.

Can we be the first to put Andy Serkis' name forth to direct the sequel? He's already had his trial run behind the camera with the three "The Hobbit" films, and he acted as a CGI character in those movies as well. He would be more than capable of tackling "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" as well, and he is already clearly passionate about the project. It doesn't seem like much of a stretch to assume that Serkis wants to keep directing going forward, so this would be the perfect opportunity for his feature debut.

"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" still looks like it could be on track for its May 23, 2014 release date. Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver have penned a script for the film, so now all it needs is a director and a production start date. It will be interesting to discover if the sequel will focus squarely on Caesar or will continue to incorporate James Franco's Will Rodman and Freida Pinto's Caroline Aranha as well.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
