Everyone seems to have an opinion on Chief Keef. While most either love or hate the Chicago’s teen brand of rambunctious rap, Lupe Fiasco has a deeper take on Interscope’s new artist.

“Chief Keef scares me,” Lupe said when he appeared on Baltimore’s 92Q last week with hosts AJ and Angel Baby. “Not him specifically, but just the culture that he represents, specifically in Chicago.”

Fiasco’s hometown has made headlines of late due to the alarming number of homicides that have been taking place in the city. The way that tracks like Keef ’s “I Don’t Like” represent youth culture in the Chi has Lupe uneasy. “To hear the things that he raps about specifically, comparing it to, you open up the paper and its 22 shootings this weekend and the next day there’s three and the next day there’s four,” he said. “It scares me to see that.”

The rapper who is set to release his fourth LP Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1 later this month made it clear that he wasn’t calling Chief Keef out and he didn’t blame the youngster either. “I’m not at him, I’m at where he came from and places like that still exist and that incubate that mentality,” he said to clarify.

In July the politically-minded lyricist appeared on “RapFix Live” and after watching a piece of old tape that showed some of his friends that had either died or are in jail, Lupe broke down in tears. "Chicago's the murder capital. The dudes in that video are in prison, a couple of fed cases, and then there's ghosts. You see people that, that ain't there," he said sobbing trying to fight back his tears.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
