No matter how hard we try not to over-analyze it, this "RoboCop" reboot just keeps commanding our attention. And just when we think the multiple casting announcements will come to an end, we get a brand new one thrown at us.

According to Deadline, Michael Keaton is set to play the role of Raymond Sellars, the CEO of the corporation that commissions RoboCop. The Sellars role is a delightfully villainous one, especially in Keaton's hands, that was reportedly offered to and then turned down by "House" actor Hugh Laurie.

No matter the mixed rumblings about the film's script and tone, this news keeps me cautiously optimistic as I for one appreciate the addition of Michael Keaton to anything. Anything. He is way too underused by Hollywood (Or he is wisely not being used and instead waiting for the right projects) and clearly director Jose Padilha agrees.

"Michael is the final addition to the amazing cast we have assembled for this film and it is so great to have the last puzzle piece in place," Padilha said in a statement. "It is thrilling that everything has come together to bring this innovative new vision of RoboCop to life. We’ve got a great script, a great cast, some killer ED-209’s and I can’t wait to get Alex Murphy back on the streets."

Keaton joins an already star-studded cast that includes: Joel Kinnaman, Abbie Cornish, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Jay Baruchel, Jennifer Ehle, Jackie Earle Haley and Michael Kenneth Williams.

RoboCop is currently slated to be released on August 9, 2013.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
