Sony Pictures will honor James Bond with his own day on October 5 to celebrate the character's 50th anniversary.

The studio sent out a press release announcing James Bond Day, which will occur exactly 50 years after "Dr. No" premiered in London. Sony is promising "a day-long series of events for Bond fans around the world," which we hope means that Daniel Craig and Queen Elizabeth II will skydive at various locations around the world like they sort of did at the 2012 London Olympics. That's what it means to be on her majesty's secret service, right?

In all seriousness, James Bond Day will include a number of events to honor 007 including "a global online and live auction charity event of 50 lots to benefit twelve charitable institutions organized by Christie's in London, a global survey to discover the favorite Bond film by country, a film retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, a Music of Bond night in Los Angeles hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and an exhibition, 'Designing 007: 50 Years of Bond Style,' at TIFF in Toronto."

There also will be the release of the recently-announced documentary "Everything or Nothing: The Untold Story of 007." Meanwhile, the James Bond Blu-Ray boxed set will have already been released on September 24, while "Skyfall" hits theaters on November 9.

"Skyfall" producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said in a statement, "We are absolutely thrilled to be celebrating James Bond's golden anniversary on film with this special day of events for Bond fans around the world."

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
