Robert Pattinson Cut It Close In 'Cosmopolis'

As with any film, there are certain hazards that come with making a David Cronenberg film. But when it's a Cronenberg film that you're in, those problems may skew more towards the bizarre.

For Robert Pattinson during the filming of the Canadian director's latest film, "Cosmopolis," those hazards were potentially getting an ear lopped off during a haircut and not choosing the perfect line of dialogue in a sex scene, during which to climax.

"They both had their points," Pattinson said.

The actor dished on all of the experiences of filming a Cronenberg movie when he sat down with MTV News' Josh Horowitz during MTV First.

In "Cosmopolis," Pattinson plays a listless, young billionaire, who becomes fixated on traveling across Manhattan to get his haircut. When that trim does happen, it comes dangerously close to doing some real damage. "The haircut, the difficult thing, I really wanted it to look like there were patches of scalp showing," he said. "But the guy's obviously not a barber, and he was acting as well with a huge pair of scissors, and he had to cut so close to the skin. He almost cut my ear off. That was kind of frightening, especially when I'm supposed to be this savant that's not [phased]. But I'm terrified he's going to cut my ear off."

The extended sex scene in a limo required an equal amount of nerve, since Pattinson only found out about it on the day of filming. "In the script, they weren't having sex, it was after," Pattinson said. "They finish having sex when the scene happens, and David told me that morning he was like, 'It would be more interesting.' So even the dialogue, everything about it changes completely, 'cause we're, like, talking about the other security guard. It becomes funnier as well."

Filming a sex scene by itself comes with a certain amount a pressure, but adding dialogue complicates the matter. "There's the mechanics of the sex scene. Where does it climax? You're trying to figure that out. There's six pages of dialogue. That was my idea, where to climax. I had the idea of climaxing and saying, 'Do you find this interesting?' That's a cool line."

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
