In a recent interview with media mogul Oprah Winfrey, Rihanna reveals a more vulnerable side. To Winfrey’s surprise (the host admitted earlier, "I thought she was going to be kind of a badass") the singer grew emotional when asked about the much talked about domestic violence incident with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown.

"It was a weird, confusing space to be in," Rihanna told Winfrey. "Because as angry as I was, as angry and hurt and betrayed, I just felt like he made that mistake because he needed help and who's going to help him? Everybody's going to say he's a monster without looking at the source, and I was more concerned about him." The 24-year-old singer went on to say she felt “protective” of Brown after the incident.

Brown assaulted the Barbados native, leaving her visibly battered, the night before the 2009 Grammy Awards. Consequently, both Rihanna and Brown pulled out of their performances at the award show. Brown was later sentenced to 5 years’ probation, one year of domestic violence counseling, and community service.

"I lost my best friend. Everything I knew switched ... switched in a night and I couldn't control that…," Rihanna told Winfrey in her hometown of Saint Michel. “It’s not easy to interpret on camera. Not with the world watching."

The singer goes on in the no-holds-bar interview discussing her career, family, and the price of fame stating “I’m super-duper afraid of the pedestal that comes with fame. It’s amazing how lonely you can feel.” For more, watch “Oprah’s Next Chapter” with Rihanna, airing Sunday August 19th at 9pm.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
