Could the planned sequel for "Snow White and the Huntsman" have lost its Snow White?

If new reports are to be believed, that seems to be the case. Following the affair scandal between leading lady Kristen Stewart and director Rupert Sanders, it's been unclear how Universal Studios would move forward with the film's follow-up. The Hollywood Reporter is claiming that the answer is actually quite simple: the sequel will focus on The Huntsman instead of Snow White.

This is an idea that was first teased by Universal chief Ron Meyer to THR back in April. "Meyer said that while the upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman doesn’t appear to lend itself to a sequel, Universal thinks it can do more movies based on the character of the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) if it is successful," the trade wrote.

It's unlikely that the studio said that in anticipation of last month's surprise outing of Stewart and Sanders, so it seems as though a "Huntsman" spin-off was in the cards all along. Hemsworth is certainly riding high now that "Thor" and "The Avengers" are such big successes, and by the time "Snow White and the Huntsman 2" starts filming he'll likely be done with "Thor: The Dark World" and a couple of years away from "The Avengers 2."

Of course, it's not even confirmed that Sanders is directing. Universal said that neither a writer nor a director have been picked for the sequel, though Sanders is still in contention for the role. "The studio is exploring options to continue the franchise and no decisions have been made," Universal told MTV News.

Meanwhile, Universal is telling The Los Angeles Times that Stewart's exclusion is not a done deal. "[Universal] insists that plans for a second movie centering on the Huntsman character played by Chris Hemsworth are proceeding and that Stewart’s Snow White could still be a character in that film, despite reports that suggested otherwise," the newspaper insists.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
