This year will see Gerard Butler go from playing a surfer in "Chasing Mavericks" to a retired soccer player in "Playing For Keeps" (formerly "Playing the Field"), continuing his penchant for playing flawed heroes.

In the dramedy directed by Gabriele Muccino ("Seven Pounds," "The Pursuit of Happyness"), Butler plays George Dryer, once a soccer pro who played for a team wearing Celtic-esque uniforms (not coincidentally, Glasgow's Celtic F.C. is Butler's favorite team) and ruined his marriage to Stacie (Jessica Biel) with his playboy antics.

Check out the trailer after the jump!

Bankrupt and wondering what to do next with his life and career, George begins his tour of redemption by moving to Virginia to coach his son's soccer team, while trying to mend his fences with his Stacie, who is already on her way to marrying again. Enter Catherine Zeta-Jones as Denise, a former sportscaster who puts George in position to be a commentator with ESPN, which would impact his new found relationship with his son and the ever-burning flame of his former marriage to Stacie. Who said it was easy being famous and handsome?

FilmDistrict picked up the distribution rights to "Playing For Keeps" during the Cannes Film Festival, and has finally released the first trailer. Like a lot of romantic dramedies about soccer pros, the trailer shows pretty much the entire movie, but with a supporting cast that includes Dennis Quaid, Uma Thurman and Judy Greer, we're pretty sure that won't stop anyone from seeing it when it opens this winter.

"Playing For Keeps" opens December 7th.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
