When we see a film boast a cast that includes Brad Pitt, Ray Liotta, James Gandolfini and Richard Jenkins, you may not have to show us a trailer to get us in the theater. But when the trailer for "Killing Them Softly" looks like this, it's only an added incentive.

Based on the George V. Higgins 1974 novel "Cogan's Trade," the Andrew Dominik-directed film brings us a mobster movie to hold us over until "Gangster Squad" comes out in January. When two newbies with sawed-off shotguns and women's tights on their heads interrupt a mob-protected poker game, the crime boss hires Pitt to find and kill them. Pitt's style is to "kill 'em softly" according to the trailer, which means bringing in Gandolfini's character to do the dirty work.

The fact that "Killing Them Softly" premiered at the Cannes earlier this year to a bevy of positive reviews only adds fuel to the fire. You don't have to ask us twice if this movie makes our must list this fall.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
