"RoboCop," you're beginning to impress us.

Jose Padilha's planned remake of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 classic was a movie we didn't want when it was first announced, but now interests us more and more with each passing day. Hugh Laurie's casting seemed like the icing on the cake when it was announced a month ago, but now two more great actors are circling the project and we're waiting with baited breath to see where Padhila takes the remake from here.

Deadline is reporting that Jackie Earle Haley has nabbed the role of Maddox, the man who gives Joel Kinnaman's RoboCop his military training. Jay Baruchel is reportedly also in talks for a currently unannounced role.

Those are two great additions to an already impressive roster. Haley and (potentially) Baruchel join Laurie, Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Abbie Cornish and Samuel L. Jackson. And it sounds like casting hasn't finished yet, as the film is still in pre-production.

Haley is a staple MVP from just about every movie he's ever been in, most recently "Dark Shadows," "Watchmen" and the remake of "A Nightmare on Elm Street." He's almost guaranteed to steal every scene that he's in, but it's Baruchel we're really interested in. Baruchel has made some great strides since "Undeclared," now working with people like David Cronenberg in "Cosmopolis" and getting cast in what looks to be a great remake of a cult classic. We're glad we get to see more of what this great actor has to offer, instead of only seeing him as a nerd in comedies.

"RoboCop" follows a Detroit police officer named Alex Murphy who is killed while trying to fend off some local criminals. He is given a second lease on life by OmniCorp, and is resurrected as a mostly-robotic crime fighting machine. Oldman will play the scientist who created RoboCop, Laurie is the CEO of OmniCorp, Cornish is Murphy's wife (who was only seen in flashbacks in the original "RoboCop") and Jackson will play a charismatic media mogul. "RoboCop" is slated for a summer 2013 release date.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
