Reese Witherspoon to Produce Big-Screen Adaptation of 'Gone Girl'

Gillian Flynn's latest novel is getting the big screen treatment. [url="http://www.deadline.com/2012/07/comic-con-fox-reese-witherspoon-at-center-of-7-figure-deal-for-gillian-flynn-novel-gone-girl/"]Deadline reported[/url] that Flynn's "Gone Girl" has been acquired by 20th Century Fox for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.

That's a big chunk of change, and there's also already a big name producer attached. According to Deadline, [url="http://www.mtv.com/movies/person/67798/personmain.jhtml"]Reese Witherspoon[/url] will produce the project along with Bruna Papandrea and Leslie Dixon. "Gone Girl" is Flynn's third book, and Deadline notes that her other two works ("Dark Places" and "Sharp Objects") are in film development already. Talk about an awesome track record.



"Gone Girl" is centered around the disappearance of Amy Dunne on the fifth anniversary of her marriage, leaving her husband, Nick, as the most likely suspect. In her review of the novel in the [url="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/30/books/gone-girl-by-gillian-flynn.html"]New York Times[/url] back in May, Janet Maslin wrote: "It is wily, mercurial, subtly layered and populated by characters so well imagined that they’re hard to part with — even if, as in Amy’s case, they are already departed."

With a glowing review like that, it's hard not to get excited about what "Gone Girl" could look like on the big screen. Readers have already been checking out Flynn's book, securing "Gone Girl" a number one spot on the [url="http://www.nytimes.com/best-sellers-books/overview.html"]New York Times' Hardcover Fiction Best Sellers list[/url] as Deadline pointed out. Perhaps the story may find itself one day making it to number one at the box office as well.
