Warner Bros.' planned remake of "Tarzan" is gathering together some impressive directing talent. Maybe the studio is trying to give the classic story the young adult treatment, because two of the directors vying to helm the flick have established themselves as forces to be reckoned with when it comes to making movies for tweens, teens and twentysomethings.

Deadline is reporting that David Yates, Gary Ross and Susanna White are all interested in directing the project. The site doesn't give us any more than that, but we can guess some general information on the project based on the talents involved.

Yates is best known for directing the last four "Harry Potter" movies. That means he's got a pretty good relationship set up with Warner Bros, since those movies have gone on to make bucketloads of money. It also means he knows a thing or two about adapting from a novel, especially one that appeals to kids and has elements of adventure in it.

Also well versed in adapting action-packed novels is Ross, who helmed Lionsgate's adaptation of "The Hunger Games." He ultimately passed on its sequel, "Catching Fire," allegedly so he could go on to direct a project close to his heart. It would be a bit surprising for him to move on to this movie now unless it had something that strongly appealed to him. Ross has also directed (and wrote) "Pleasantville" and "Seabiscuit," both of which were strong character films.

And then there's White, arguably the least well known of the trio. She directed episodes from the HBO miniseries "Generation Kill," as well as the kid's flick "Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang," showing that she can also bridge the gap between action and family-friendly. But she's got the upcoming BBC/HBO series "Parade's End" in her near future, so we aren't quite sure that she's got the space in her schedule to tackle "Tarzan."

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
