James Cameron Only Making 'Avatar' Movies From Now On?

According to a new interview, [url="http://www.mtv.com/movies/person/9282/personmain.jhtml"]James Cameron[/url] plans on only making his own movies for the rest of his career. For the time being, that seems to mean making his "Avatar" series.

In an interview with [url="http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/05/05/james-cameron-on-chinese-filmmakers-censorship-and-potential-co-productions/"][i]The New York Times[/i][/url], Cameron said that he is solely working on these movies since they've been such a focus of his life for so long.



"I’ve divided my time over the last 16 years over deep ocean exploration and filmmaking. I’ve made two movies in 16 years, and I’ve done eight expeditions," he said. "Last year I basically completely disbanded my production company’s development arm. So I’m not interested in developing anything. I’m in the 'Avatar' business. Period. That’s it. I’m making '[url="http://www.mtv.com/movies/movie/466787/moviemain.jhtml"]Avatar 2[/url],' '[url="http://www.mtv.com/movies/movie/466790/moviemain.jhtml"]Avatar 3[/url],' maybe 'Avatar 4,' and I’m not going to produce other people’s movies for them. I’m not interested in taking scripts."



He continued, "And that all sounds I suppose a little bit restricted, but the point is I think within the 'Avatar' landscape I can say everything I need to say that I think needs to be said, in terms of the state of the world and what I think we need to be doing about it. And doing it in an entertaining way. And anything I can’t say in that area, I want to say through documentaries, which I’m continuing. I’ve done five documentaries in the last 10 years, and I’ll hopefully do a lot more."

It's unclear whether Cameron is trying to say that he is done making any movies other than "Avatar," or whether he just doesn't want to direct and produce films that he hasn't written. When we talked to Cameron last month while he was promoting "Titanic's" re-release in 3D, he said there was still a chance he'd bring his passion project "[url="http://moviesblog.mtv.com/tag/battle-angel"]Battle Angel[/url]" to the big screen one day.

"It would have to be pried out of my cold dead fingers," he said. "But on the other hand, I don't want to take it to my grave either. [We want to see it] at some point, yeah."

He said that the reason that he's working on "Avatar 2," "3" and now possibly "4" instead of "Battle Angel" is because he believes they can do "more good."

"I see the good the 'Avatar' franchise can do in terms of keeping a world audience cognizant of our relationship with nature, but doing it in an entertainment context," he said. "Ultimately I think there's more good to be done there than with 'Battle Angel.' 'Battle Angel' is just a great, kick ass story."
