With the news that Francis Lawrence is going to be directing "Catching Fire" still hot off the presses, Lionsgate has also announced that "The Hunger Games" is going to be rereleased in IMAX for one week's time.

To date, "Hunger Games" has brought in almost $341 million domestic, and $13.2 million of that is thanks to its IMAX sales. Lionsgate and IMAX will return the film to theaters on April 27, and it will play through May 3.

"It's wonderful that so many fans have expressed interest in seeing 'The Hunger Games' in the immersive IMAX format, and many of these are repeat viewers," said Lionsgate's Motion Picture Group Co-Chair Rob Friedman in a press release. "We're delighted that IMAX has been able to accommodate them through this special one week re-engagement."

It's worth noting that "The Avengers" will be released in IMAX starting on May 4, so it really is like "The Hunger Games" is passing off the torch. I'm glad that IMAX is getting so much love this year, because I agree with Christopher Nolan that it's the best film format around.

Many experts are saying that "The Hunger Games" is likely to finally lose its number one spot at the box office to Zac Efron's "The Lucky One" this weekend. Hopefully this rerelease in IMAX will give the film the boost it needs for one last hurrah. Who knows, maybe it will help the flick make it over $400 million domestic in its final run. If any movie deserves it, it's "The Hunger Games."

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
