There might be some life left in "The Dark Tower" after all. Ron Howard and Brian Grazer's ambitious three-films-and-two-TV-series adaptation plan might have had Universal running for the hills, but it got HBO interested in the TV portion and now reportedly has another studio looking to produce the films as well.

Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros is "very close" to making a deal to allow Howard to at least direct the first "Dark Tower" film. Since both the WB and HBO are owned by Time Warner, it feels like a match made in heaven. HBO is a perfect home for King's brand of fantasy, and Warner Bros is already hard at work bringing an adaptation of "The Stand" to the big screen, so the pairing makes sense.

In addition to Warner Bros actually looking to pick up the project, Deadline reports that Javier Bardem is still on board to play the Gunslinger in the adaptation, assuming his schedule allows his participation. This is some pretty exciting news considering it's been a long time since Bardem first attached himself to the "Dark Tower" films/TV shows.

It will be interesting to see how Warner Bros and HBO work together to bring "The Dark Tower" to the big and small screens. Grazer told MTV News that part of the reason why new studios are so interested in picking up "The Dark Tower" is because he and Howard have trimmed much of the fat from the budget.

"We're going to do that movie. We've lost $45 million out of the budget," he said. "When people say no to you enough, then you have to lose money, which we've done without harming the scope of the film."

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
