It's been 10 years since the first "Lord of the Rings" film first hit theaters, and in that decade the movie series has become one of the most treasured accomplishments to ever grace the big screen. The franchise went on to win a total of 17 Oscars, including Best Director for Peter Jackson and Best Picture for "Return of the King," and has also grossed more than $1 billion domestically. Needless to say, it's a series that a lot of people care about.

Watch the "Hobbit" trailer!</p>That's why it was so heart-warming to see the trailer for "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" grace our computer screens for the first time this week. We already listed off the five best reveals in the trailer, but what really got to us was how nostalgic it made us feel. Jackson knows how much this audience has missed their time spent in Middle Earth and the studio is playing it up as much as they can. Appropriately, we as fans are loving every second of it.

After the jump, we list off our five most nostalgic moments in the trailer.

The Transition From New To Old
The teaser opens up with Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Bilbo (Ian Holm) walking around their home, Bag End, as Bilbo tells his young cousin that there's a little bit more to his adventure with Gandalf and the dwarves than he originally told him. Cue a transition back in time to a much younger Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and you have the opening to this trailer. Our heartstrings were definitely pulled.

A Return To The Shire
It's ironic that fans of the "Lord of the Rings" series are able to do the one thing its star, Frodo, was never able to: return to the Shire when it was still innocent and happy. While Frodo and The Shire were forever changed after the war against Sauron, we fans are able to return to the wonderful town of Hobbiton in all its cheery glory yet again. It wasn't until footage of the area started rolling that we truly realized how much we had missed it.

Familiar Faces, New Plot Lines
Is there going to be some romantic tension going on between Gandalf (Ian McKellan) and Galadriel (Cate Blanchett)? From the looks of things in the trailer, there just might be. To be honest, though, we don't really mind the potential deviation from Tolkien canon. We are just happy to see the faces of two of our favorite characters again in full wizard and elven regalia, respectively. It helps that both characters are said to have some pretty major roles in the coming two "Hobbit" films as well.

Broken Swords, Blue Stings
In addition to all the familiar locations we see in the trailer for "The Hobbit" -- the Shire, Rivendell, Gollum's cave -- there are a few familiar weapons that have snuck in there as well. Bilbo marvels at the broken sword Narsil in Rivendell in a way that's very reminiscent of Frodo's first sighting of it in "Lord of the Rings." Of course, we know it's not until Aragon shows up some 60 years later that the sword ends up getting repaired, but we still love the nostalgia that comes after a sighting of the important weapon. Another similarly wonderful moment is when Bilbo pulls his sword Sting out of its sheath for seemingly the first time. Bilbo will later pass the weapon off to Frodo when the young hobbit embarks on his own great adventure with Gandalf, but for now the sword is Bilbo's and Bilbo's alone.

The Precious
There's one scene from "The Lord of the Rings" that we know for sure will be recreated in "The Hobbit": Bilbo's first encounter with Gollum (Andy Serkis). It's one of the most pivotal moments in the entire history of Middle Earth, and one of the most iconic scenes in "The Hobbit." Needless to say, the big reveal of Gollum and his precious -- the one ring to rule them all -- is saved until the end of the trailer, and is appropriately effective. It looks like Jackson did a spot-on job of recreating that scene from the earlier films as well, which is comforting.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
