Peter Jackson has been great about granting fans a Middle Earth-sized view of production on "The Hobbit." Not only has the director composed four comprehensive and highly entertaining video production diaries for viewing via his Facebook page, but he's set up some nerd journalists with full on production-length tours of duty sprawling the endlessly green New Zealand set.

Ain't It Cool's Quint has presented his fourth and fifth reports from the set of "The Hobbit," where cast and crew crawl from one misty green gully to the next in the fashion of the motley team of misshaped adventurers they portray.

Leaving what has officially become Hobbiton, the crew moved down New Zealand's North Island to a popular rock-climbing spot set to represent Trollshaw, where Bilbo, the dwarves (we've now seen all 13) and Gandalf face the Stone Trolls and pilfer their collected death trophies. Among those pilfered trophies found is Sting — the tiny Elfin sword imparted to Bilbo by Gandalf and eventually given by Bilbo to Frodo in "Lord of the Rings."

Quint also catches a moment with Steven Hunter, who plays one particularly recognizable dwarf, Bombur, on his off time. See him below:

Within a fifth set report from the same location comes a tense moment between Gandalf and Dwarf leader Thorin. Gandalf wants Thorin to seek council from Elrond at Rivendell before embarking on their quest. Thorin bears resentment against elves for age-old infraction he believes the race has committed against dwarves, but eventually relents.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
