Get out your Starfleet uniforms and your Vulcan ears, because "Star Trek 2" has an official filming start date.

TrekMovie has learned that shooting is set to start on January 15 for a 2013 release date. This pretty much lines up with what we already know, but it's nice to have confirmation on a planned start date considering how much "Trek 2" has been pushed back.

Apparently writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof are also busy taking a third pass at the script, but TrekMovie believes that they're only tinkering with minor things and the movie as a whole is set to go.

Much of the design work has been completed for the film, and construction has already started on some of the new sets needed. Apparently director J.J. Abrams and the production team are planning on reusing many of the sets from the 2009 film such as the USS Enterprise, so they already have a step in the right direction.

Speaking of sets, though, Abrams has apparently been missing all the tropical climates he got to deal with on "Lost" because he's planning on heading back to Hawaii for "Trek 2." He is seriously considering turning the location into a "jungle planet." The film will also shoot at a Los Angeles museum to stand in for what a source told TrekMovie is a "famous Star Trek location."

While the main cast is returning for the film, none of the new roles have been cast yet. Benicio Del Toro is being eyed to play the new "Trek" villain.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
