A new trailer for "Brave," the latest Pixar and Disney collaboration, has sprung to life, and it looks to mix the best elements of both companies.

"Brave" follows Scottish princess Merida (voiced by "Boardwalk Empire's" Kelly MacDonald) as a young woman determined to carve out her own place in the world. She rebels against her parents (Billy Connolly and Emma Thompson) and defies her country's age-old custom in order to seek her own independence. In doing so, she unwittingly unleashes chaos on her kingdom and is forced to "discover the meaning of true bravery" in order to right the wrongs she created.

There's some really impressive animation in "Brave," as Pixar fans have come to expect. This is one of only three films Pixar has done that have starred solely humans (the other two being "Up" and "The Incredibles"), though many of their other movies have included human characters. Still, it's nice to see such great emphasis being placed on the human aspects of their animation -- just look at Merida's hair! -- instead of making a talking fish or toy as realistic as possible.

Still, I'm confused about some parts of this trailer. What does a bear in the woods have to do with Merida's independence? Why do parents so intent on marrying their daughter off give a second thought to her going off to gain her freedom? And why does there have to be a man waving his underoos around from under his kilt?

"Brave" is one of my more anticipated films of 2012, but so far the two trailers released for it haven't done the concept justice in my eyes. Here's hoping that trailer number three does the trick for me.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
