What Should Beyoncé Bust Out At The VMAs?

Beyoncé has just been announced as one of the performers on the star-studded lineup at this year's MTV Video Music Awards. No one, except maybe her hubby Jay-Z, knows exactly what the R&B and pop megastar will perform, but she has plenty of options.

A song from her latest album, 4, is obvious. But if she's going to use the venue to its full potential we doubt she'll repeat herself. She already performed the album's lead single, "Run the World (Girls)" at the Billboard Music Awards in May, so it's a safe bet that's out. And in June she performed "Best Thing I Never Had," the album's second single, and "End of Time" for the BET Awards, via a live satellite feed from the Glastonbury music festival. Before that, she debuted "1+1" on "American Idol," in May, so you can probably nix that, too.

So what's left? Hip-hop heads would probably like to see Beyoncé perform "Party," since it is produced by Kanye West and features a guest verse from enigmatic OutKast rapper Andre 3000. A video for the song has already been shot in New Jersey, so a VMA performance, with 3 Stacks in the building, would be an epic look, right?

On the other hand, it has also been reported that Adria Petty, who previously directed Beyoncé's "Sweet Dreams" video, is directing a video for the uptempo "Countdown," which would make for a fun show.

Or she could go a less conventional route and pick "Lift Off," from Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne. No one's mentioned whether Jigga and Yeezy will be in town to perform the stadium-worthy tune that features Beyoncé on the chorus, but we can dream. Another pair of sleepers picks could be "I Miss You," which was co-written by Odd Future-affiliated crooner Frank Ocean, and "Love on Top," which was co-written by The-Dream.

We'll have to wait until Sunday to see what Beyoncé chooses to tear down the stage with, but in the meantime, you tell us: Which song should B sing on the VMA stage this year?

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
